Ok, I took advantage of the mover's connection yesterday as I'm moving into a house next month. They will be bringing out a new dish, but I was told that I had to upgrade my 2 HR10-250's to their new HR20. Yeah right!! No way I'm getting rid of my HD Tivo's yet. I told them no way, so they went ahead with order and set it up. But they tried to explain to me that when all the new HD channels become available in September, the HR10-250 will be obsolete as far as HD channels are concerned. They said that HBO and Showtime HD channels 70-71, and all the other HD channels in the 70's will be in MPEG 4 and my equipment won't be able to get it anymore.

Ok, I can see trying to sell someone on your equipment, but LYING to do it is going too far. There is no way they are moving those channels to MPEG 4 only. I was waiting for them to tell me Superfan was only going to be in MPEG 4 only as well. Not to mention that I still will get all my locals in HD OTA.

I doubt it'll be as soon as September, but it might be within the next 6-18 months when ...other than OTA ...all the HD channels will be MPEG4 'only.'

So they really weren't lying to you.

Technically they were. They specifically said that when the new HD channels are available in September, I won't be able to get the ones I currently get anymore (channels 70-79) because they will be converted to MPEG4 in September. Yeah down the line I know that all will be in MPEG4, but they were trying to get me to go with the HR20's by saying I will have NO HD access(other that OTA) in September.

One could make the argument that when the first mpeg-4 HD channel becomes active, the HR10-250 will be obsolete. It will be incapable of receiving the new channel regardless of what it currently receives.

Guaranteed... 100%... the existing SAT based MPEG-2HD channels, will be converted to MPEG-4 and moved to the 99/103 orbit slots.

The "when" is the only question... most certainly won't be September...
But dont' expect it to linger on for 18 months....

As for the HR10-250 being "obsolete"....
I am trying to use the term "depriciated" as it is more accurate to what is going on.

I do not think they are converting the satellite at the 119 slot to mpeg-4 and moving it, they have way to many spot beams and spanish language channels on that satellite to move it. The 110 sat may be moved but it depends on thenext satellite launch. OTA mpeg-2 will of course keep working just fine.

Not quite sure what you're referring to there. The MPEG2 HD *channels* currently on 101, 110 and 119 will but shut off and turned on the new sats at 99 and 103. Thus the bandwidth they took up on 101/110/119 will be freed up allow them to add more SD locals and what not. Maybe even improve SD PQ. :D

The 110 and 119 satellites aren't going anywhere.

The next sat, D11, is going at 99. D10 that was just launched will be at 103.
