I have the HR10-250 and I would like to transfer some non-HD programming to my computer so that I can burn the programming to a DVD. Can somebody please point me in the right direction.

My computer is not near my HR10-250, so I will probably need some intermediate storage device -- unless it is better to go directly from the HR10-250 to my computer, in which case I could always just move one of them closer to the other.

You'll need to hack your HR10 and add it to your network. Then you can extract and burn shows using tytool.

Visit the underground or upgrade forums.

Alternatively, invest $80 or so in a DVD Recorder and use the Save to VCR option. Much simpler and cleaner than messing with transfers to the PC.

Extraction will allow you to edit the commercials etc.

Wow. Thanks for the quick responses. I know we aren't supposed to talk about hacking in this forum -- and that's fine with me, since I visited the underground and read a couple of websites about what that entails and it's way, WAY, over my head. I'm absolutely positive I would have problems with that endeavor.

Looks like I'll look into DVD Recorders. Since I'm going to buy one, I might as well get a good one. Will all models work with the HR10-250?

You could also get a cheap video capture card, capture to your PC, edit out commercials, then burn to DVD.

I think you're confusing outputs with inputs. There is an input to plug in your antenna. There are several outputs of varying types - composite, component, HDMI, etc.

On my HR10 I use the component output to my HDTV (no HDMI). I then use the composite outputs to my DVD recorder.

Simpler? Without a doubt. Cleaner? Not a chance. Direct extraction keeps the original signal in digital format and retains the original picture quality and digital audio, including Dolby Digital. Using the analog outputs converts the signal from digital to analog and then back again, resulting in noticeable degradation of the signal. You also lose the Dolby Digital soundtrack. Couple this with a SA Tivo and you end up with additional A/D processing for a significantly degraded image. If you're more concerned with convenience and not quality then an external DVD recorder or video capture card will work for you. Some of us prefer something a bit better.

I think you'll find that the composite output is automatically 480i, so there's no need to change a thing.

It would be nice if it was, but while it is only 480i, its only active when output resolution is set to same.

Basically, you play the recording into the PC using an analog capture card/device. Then using software, that probably would come with the capture card/device, you can edit out the commercials and then burn the result to a DVD.

You can do the same with a DVD recorder. I do it all the time. And contrary to popular belief, you can even edit out commercials.

Here's what I do:

I have my HR10-250 connected to my DVD recorder with S-Video and white and red audio jacks. I then play my show that was previously recorded on my tivo and record it to my DVD recorder with a DVD-RW disc. When it's done, I finalize the disc so it will play in my computer.

I then use a program called DVD Moviefactory to extract the mpeg file to my computer so I can edit out the commercials.

Once the file is on my computer, I open it with another program called mpeg2vcr which lets me cut out commercials right down to the frame. When I'm done with that, I resave the new edited mpeg file and it's ready to be made into a dvd with DVD Moviefactory.

It works great and the quality of the recording is way better than any capture card out there. I basically tried them all a year or so ago.

I mainly do this for all my Steelers' games from the NFL Sunday ticket channels in HD. They look great, as long as they're not the SD feed. Direct barely uses SVCD quality for their SD channels. That's why they look so bad. However, the HD channels come out really nice even though they are being downconverted to 480i so they can be recorded.
