I have a Series 2 dual tuner TiVo. My cable is split so one prong goes to my cable modem (which runs my cable phone and wireless router) and the other prong goes to my cable box.

I set up the IR so I can view all my cable "box" channels through TiVo. BUT I've lost the basic cable (I can view those channels as box not cable) and thus I can't record 2 basic channels or view one and record a box channel).

Do I need a 2nd splitter - where would it go?

you can get a second splitter and split the cable just before the cable box - one side to the cable box and the other to the Tivo.

or preferably you can get a 3 way splitter - one to the modem, one to the cable box and one to the Tivo

I'm pretty sure that the setup instructions for the S2DT say to split the cable just before the cable box, just as Mick66 has said. There was even a splitter and two pieces of coax in the accessory bags to make it easy.
