How to remove all the football stuff??

1917 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  PoshGypsy
The MediaCom person came to install brand new TiVo boxes a few days ago. As he was demonstrating how to use everything, he pressed the TiVo button at the top of the remote and on the HOME screen, a bunch of football, fútbol, and other sports shows appeared as large square tiles below the menu options line. I should have asked about it at the time.

How do I get rid of these suggestions so that it can create actual suggestions? It’s been almost a week. I’ve mined through everything I can find online, and from what I can gather these suggestions are supposed to be predictions on what I might like based on my watch history, the “SmartBar.” Well it’s pretty dumb because I have never watched all of these football, mountain biking, auto racing, etc shows. I alone watch the TV and besides, these suggestions were present immediately after the install. I’ve tried everything to get rid of these suggestions. I’ve called MediaCom and they have no idea how to fix it.

Can anyone offer any help?

Check My Shows Options. Is Sports checked? If so, uncheck it. I think it's not just your watch history that controls the Discovery Bar. It's like Suggestions: crowd sourcing. Right now mine shows the obligatory TiVo+, live programs and a program in My Shows. You can move down and scroll that bar. Does anything other than sports appear?

If I ever saw sports down there I would be pissed since my cable feed has no sports channels (period). I save $20/month by not having them. I still get the network sports, but nothing else.
Thank you so much for responding. Yes, that was one of the first things I tried, unchecking the "sports" option. I was so pleased with myself, too, because I thought I had solved the problem but the sports suggestions are still present. In fact, I went through every option I could find in every section of the TiVo menu, deleting and unchecking everything that had to do with sports, even unchecking the sports channels from the My Channels lineup. I've scrolled through the bar and nothing other than sports appears: Rugby, Boxing, Auto Racing, Motorcross Bike something, Latin American futbol, etc. I've even clicked on a tile to look for some kind of "delete" option but it just gives options for LiveTV, OnePass Options, Upcoming Airings and All Upcoming Episodes. I've pressed "A" on every menu looking for additional options to delete and there is nothing.

I have four TiVO boxes installed and the same sports shows are displayed on all four TiVO sets. I've done the same (above) on all sets in the event that they are somehow interconnected but ... nothing. Is there some kind of online app that connects to the TiVO where you can make additional changes?

This is what the advertisement says about the TiVo SmartBar (underlining is mine, incidentally, none of the tiles have a yellow star): https://support.tivo.com/articles/Knowledge/TiVo-Experience-4-TiVo-Home:

  • SmartBar (Bottom)
The SmartBar, located at the bottom of the HOME screen, displays personalized predictions of shows based on the user's viewing habits and preferences. As of this document's writing, prediction sources include recordings and live TV that the user watches. It does not predict shows that the user watches on OTT only. For example, Orange is the New Black is a Netflix Original series, thus it will not be on the SmartBar.

The first position on the SmartBar is reserved for ads. The tile itself has a different aspect ratio from the other tiles on the strip. There is also a gold star which indicates the content is an ad. (Other tiles on the strip will not have a yellow star, indicating that the content is a prediction.)

The SmartBar wraps left and right, and wraps around at the end of the strip. A vertical divider line indicates the start of the strip.
To launch a show, navigate to the desired show and press SELECT on the remote control.

They are on Twitter. You could attack them @TiVoSupport. I would not suggest calling. It could cause brain damage. You might try DSLReports. Mediacom forum | DSLReports, ISP Information

Did you restart the boxes after unchecking the sports option?

No I haven't tried that, that's a good idea. I will look up how to restart the box and try that before I taunt brain damage by contacting TiVo support. ;)

EDIT: Darn, I had such high hopes for the restart. Didn't work.
I set up a new Edge a couple of weeks ago and something similar happened to me. After I got it working with the cable company it didn't take long for them to change over to what we actually record and or watch. I do sometimes watch the team I like play football so right now there is a Fox NFL Sunday box right on the home screen, so its still trying. I didn't uncheck anything though. I'm fairly confident that you won't see sports options down there in a couple of weeks of using it if you aren't watching any.

Menu/Help/Restart Box. It only takes about 5 minutes. It will make a service connection within 30 minutes after it's done. All normal TiVo boxes do that.
The RESTART didn't work but I'll give it a while.

@Fugacity thank you very much, I was wondering if I might have to wait a little bit, but I thought after a few days it would kick in. I'll give it a couple of weeks before I contact TiVo support.

Thanks everyone for all of your help!

I know I just ignore the smart bar as noise. It isn’t very useful because it will also tell you something is live (insinuating that it is on now) when it isn’t.

It will change with your usage though.
It used to be that you could give the TiVo direct feedback on what you liked or didn't like via the "Thumbs" buttons, but apparently they got rid of that in the new UI ("TiVo Experience 4" or "TE4"). Kinda baffling -- it was an iconic part of the TiVo brand.
....... TiVoSupport. I would not suggest calling. It could cause brain damage. .....
LOL. Oh Yeah. Unfortunately true of way too many customer support portals. And chat? Don't get me started! Maybe I just come up with complex issues that scripts don't cover.
Almost a week after the install and the lineup at the bottom has changed as of this morning... only now it shows PetsTV and The Kardashians .... the closest I've ever come to watching a dog and pony show is Family Guy?o_O I'm beginning to think that yes, I should just ignore.
