Actually, I think all you need to do is a restart of the unit. Unplug it, then install the adapter and then plug it back in. But the experts in the Home Media Features forum know more about this than I do.

I had previously had it setup on wireless and did a delete and clear operation on the box and the first time it started up after that, It gave me the option for demo mode, however, I was not thinking at the time and I selected guided setup and now I am stuck in guided setup. Even with a wired network connection which I confirmed on my server, and using the ,#401 prefix, It still will not connect on guided setup. I had this problem when I initially setup this box and ran the demo mode and it allowesd the guided setup to work through the network. I have tivo firmware version 7.1 B..Hopefully someone can help, because Humax support told me use a telephone line for setup or to call Tivo and Tivo told me to call Humax. arrgh..I wish they could just make network connections the standard..Nobody uses analog phone lines anymore..very frustrating If I find anything out, I will post it up here for you.

turns out that you will need a land line if the ,#401 prefix doesnt work for you unless you have another identical unit, then you can make a backup image from the working unit's hard drive and restore it to the non working hard drive....I'm not allowed to post links yet, so you can find details on how to do this by searching the forums for a message from Tiger that explains about MFStools.

Keep in mind that opening the unit will void your warranty

I don't have a land line, so I brought the tivo into the office, connected it to the fax line and had it set up, even upgraded to 7.1. Then I brought it home and decided to re-run guided setup. (I have a Belkin 5050 usb/ethernet adapter.) That's when I found I cannot get the #,401 trick to work.

I've read that I should go back into Demo mode then into consumer mode, but how do I get it back to the screen where it asks. I'm currently stuck with the first screen that says "Ready to change the way you watch television?".

Can I reset it further?

I just got a tivo and it won't let me get back to demo mode, any one have any idea how to get to that screen? I've cycled my tivo several times (with and without the USB adapter plugged in) and can't seem to get to that option. Any suggestions or anyone have any experience with this?

OK, I need to setup a TIVO without a Phone Line. (EDIT: This is a new out of the box old stock HUMAX DRT800 with Original thus Old Firmware) I have done my research and do not want to haul the unit to a friends house and wait 2-3-4 hours while it updates. There is a way to force the unit to use a Broadband Ethernet connection using a wired USB to Ethernet adapter.

OK, in order to do the ,#410 trick to allow a series 2 to use the Wired Ethernet adapter you need to get to the DEMO Mode if you had already tried to setup the box. The guide published throughout the internet tells you to scroll back to the beginning of your setup and you will see the screen offering the option to setup as a customer OR proceed to setup as a Retailer in the DEMO Mode.
I have done everything as stated and CANNOT get back to the screen giving me the DEMO mode option.
Many have had the same issue, but everone who has asked for a solution , unfortunately, seems to have never gotten a reply. This already has me concerned. But if the solution is out there, I figure this should be the place. Also it seems that it may be a problem with the DRT800.

So, has anyone figured out how I can get back to a factory fresh DEMO mode screen. This is needed in order to clean out the initial programming of the TIVO so it can detect and use the USB adapter. One must run the Unit one time in this DEMO mode and that is where I am at. I need to get my unit "cleared up" so it recognizes the USB Wired Ethernet Adapter.

Thanks for looking and for your time

NoMoWires -- take a look at the dates of the posts a few up from yours. This need for the ,#401 "trick" went away years ago when TiVo added support to perform Guided Setup with a supported network adapter. I think it was added at around version 7.1 of the TiVo software. You can check your current version by going into the System Information screen.

If the adapter you're trying to use is one that will work with a TiVo (go to www.tivo.com/adapters), you should be all set.

Bob, Thank you for taking time to respond.
The problem is this. This is a BRAND NEW, Old Stock \HUMAX DRT800. It does not have a recent version of the Software. Thus, I must get connected to the TIVO servers using what I have, and what I have is a Broadband Connection at home and a USB to Ethernet adapter. My software is original, what came stock with a 5+ year old HUMAX DRT800, and that is it. So if I cannot get this to qork, my only solution is 30 miles each way jaunt with DRT800 to Moms House, hang out for several hours and wait for downloads. Thats just not on my list of things to do this week LOL.

As I stated, and I dont wish to be rude, but, I know what I need and what I need is to get this DRT800 to recognize that I have a USB Wired USB to Ethernet Adapter so it can connect to the TIVO Server and update this machines software so that I can just plugin my Netgear USB 802.11 adapter. And in order for this occur I must have a DRT800 that is "like new" (and this is not at this point) so that it will detect the USB to Ethernet adapter when it boots. It will not do this unless I have it in a "never run" configuration and to do this I need toi get into the DEMO mode.

If you would like to understand my situation further, here is the detailed instructions that I am following and is fairly well circulated in the TIVO Community by those in my situation. For the detailed instructions, which lead to the original problem, the DEMO screen does NOT ever come back, as reported by many. NOTE: I just found out I cannot post a link. So below is an excerpt of the instructions.

Once again, thanks for taking the time out and offering a suggestion.

EXCERPT:
2.IF you have NEVER plugged in your TiVo, skip to step 7. If you have begun Guided Setup, proceed to step 3.
The TiVo is a machine so radically advanced it has no power button. The only way to boot it (or reboot it) is to yank the plug out of the wall, then cram it back in. Genius. So if you've ever booted it up without the adapter, it won't know that's what you need and it won't have configured itself properly. So before you can use the adapter, you've got to ERASE the primary configuration. The procedure for this is not very intuitive, and it all happens behind the scenes.

3.Select "Demo Mode (for retailers only)". (WILL NOT APPEAR)
That may not be the exact wording, but you get the idea. To find this, you will have to page allllll the way back to the very beginning of Guided Setup - the second screen, I believe. (DOES NOT HAPPEN AS REPORTED BY MANY) A very long and sappy commercial will begin. No, you won't have to sit through it.

4.Reboot.
As mentioned above, this is done by unplugging the TiVo and replugging it. That's gotta be good for the hard drive!

5.Select "No, return to Guided Setup".
This option should be immediately available when the machine finishes booting. See, it was all an elaborate ruse to get the TiVo to wipe its inital config settings. On the front of the box, angry red lights will appear next to the happy green lights, terminating the non-ethernet info along with your zip code and email address and whatever else you typed in there. ( DOES NOT ERASE MY EARLIER INFO, MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS MADE, REPORTED BY MANY) Eventually it will return to the beginning of the Guided Setup menu, but you're still not ready to go ahead with that.

What is the manufacture date and location of the DVR (on the back label)?

You will need at least 7.1 or 7.2 software to do initial set up with other that the few legacy wired Ethernet adapters and the ,#401 trick on pre 7.x software, or a phone/Serial PPP connection.

I seem to recall that the Humax and Toshiba DVD Recorder with TiVo models came with version 5.2 of the TiVo software originally.

However, I still don't know what is being used as the USB to Ethernet adapter. Not all the ones currently supported now were supported back then.

It's been a LONG time since I did this, so forgive me if my memory is foggy on this...

The way I remember doing it was putting the ,#401 in the prefix part, where the TiVo expect me to put in "9 for an outside line". FWIW I used the old linksys (200n?) Ethernet adapter.

Can you just follow the prompts as if you are going to use dialup? then enter the code in for the prefix?
