I just switched to Comcast and they are charging me 11.95 per month per cablecard. Previously, I was only paying 5 dollars per month with another provider. Is this standard? What do other people pay with Comcast?

Not Comcast, but Cablevision. I pay 1.50/card.

Cablevision in NJ is charging me $1.25 per card per month. $11.95 per month is outrageous, perhaps it is a per year fee?

In addition, Cablevision charges $1.50 for each digital service outlet that does not use their cable box. I just ordered my cablecards yesterday and the customer service person was unclear if I would pay $1.25 x 2 =$2.50 for the two cards plus $1.50 (or $3.00) for the digital service outlet since it serves two cards. Can any Cablevision NJ users tell me what they are paying for two cards and digital service to the TiVo S3 (or HD)?

I've got comcast. In both Minneapolis and St. Paul, Under combined with my Digital TV package, I qualify for the first card free, and the 2nd card for $1.50 a month. If they had mcards in St. Paul, I would be paying no addtional fee (since only one card)

You're paying the wrong fees.

What comcast package are you subscribing too? This may be part of the reason for the skewed pricing.

Also read through the "Official Comcast Cable Card Thread"...lots of discussion there on the setup, plus what people are paying...

While I don't have a TiVo HD or S3 yet, I did stop by the local Comcast office to return the Moto HD-DVRs I was renting from them in preparation for a Tivo box. I was told the first card is free and the second card would be $1.50/month. I only subscribe to the family tier which only gets the local HDs but was told it would be the same charge if I had a higher digital package.

I've got Comcast in NJ - I pay $1.75 for the 2nd cable card (first is free). $11.95 is the price they charge for having THEIR DVR hooked up to a digital outlet, $16.95 if you want the HD DVR. (at least here). You're being way overcharged.

How much will I be charged to use a CableCARD?

There is no charge for the first CableCARD that you use as it is already included in the primary outlet fee. If you have a multi-card device on the same outlet (i.e. TiVo Series 3 or two Digital Cable Tuners connected to the same personal computer), you will be charged an additional regulated fee of up to $1.91 for the second CableCARD.

If additional CableCARDs are needed for other devices that are installed on additional outlets, you will not be charged for the first CableCARD installed on this outlet as the cost is included in the additional outlet fee. In addition to the cost of the digital cable service, you will not be charged a regulated fee of up to $1.91 for the second CableCARD on the additional outlet.

**Note: The same pricing schedule will be applicable to additional outlets with multi-CableCARD devices, e.g. no charge for first CableCARD on the third outlet and an additional regulated fee of up to $1.91 for the second CableCARD in addition to the digital service charge.

Disclaimer: Regulated Prices quoted above may not apply in all markets. Please call 1-800-COMCAST to learn more about Regulated Prices for your area.

Comcast in Nashville doesn't seem to have a clear policy about CableCARD costs, at least one that all the CSRs understand. I was being charged $15.95 for digital service, which includes the first card, and $6.95 for the second card. I called and pointed out the Comcast FAQ quoted in the previous post, about the second card costing up to $1.91. The CSR graciously reduced the cost of my second card to $1.50. But without mentioning it, he de-authorized my second card from tuning all the digital standard definition channels. Although I could still get the HD channels, apparently the $1.50 charge was for a more limited channel lineup. I called and got the digital SD channels restored. I haven't received my next bill, but I expect that I'll still be charged $6.95 for the second card.

As far as I can tell, there's no comprehensive listing of the channels available for each level of digital service, at least with regard to CableCARD charges for each level.
