How does SAT actually work with a DT TIVO?

I was reading this:

""This TiVo DVR is most suitable for use in a cable TV/standard definition TV environment. It also works perfectly for DirecTV and DISH environments, but unless the household also has cable TV (analog) it will not be able to record two programs at once. But, like all TiVo DVRs, you can still watch one pre-recorded program while recording live TV.""

And... I have no idea how this works now. I was thinking of getting a Dual-Tuner SAT box and a new Dual-Tuner TIVO. When this is hooked-up the TIVO sorta takes over the sat box/cable box... and the signal is even coming from the TIVO to the tv too. So if you don't have some sorta HD output or HD TIVO isn't the sat HD box just going to waste since it's just going further and further down the high quality-wise as it goes from the HD sat box, to the TIVO, and back out the TIVO using RCA jacks (or even if you use component/hdmi it might not matter) back to your TV.

I don't understand what I quoted above either. Are you not able to record OR watch on the 2nd tuner on the TIVO without analog cable (non-sat)? I like the idea of being able to watch in case I'm recording. And I've read before about the 2nd tuner only being able to do analog channels (1-99 or so?) but I never heard before having to have cable and sat to do it. BUT above it really just talks about only being able to RECORD 2 channels at once with cable also in the house. It's all very confusing.

I'm not really sure not only how it would all be hooked-up BUT how it actually works if you have a dual-tuner HD SAT box and a dual-tuner TIVO. I've been researching whether to go with Dish or DTV for weeks, and now researching all the thing you can and can't do, what disadvantages there are with certain sat boxes, etc. It's driving me nuts. IF the sat companies just had the export to a pc feature I might just go with their dvr just to simplify my life.

Just thought of something else too.... I plan on leaving Comcast cable in my house too... along with Dish sat. Just raw cable.. not even one cable box... for one room. As cheap as possible. So I was thinking... if the DT Tivo may require a analog cable signal for one of the tuners that's ok b/c I'm wired and keeping cable anyway. But I was thinking... you set the TIVO up to do programming for one type of service. I can't have Dish coming into one connection on the TIVO and comcast cable into the other TIVO connector. The TIVO can't do that right?
There is no such thing, as far as I know, as a dual-tuner satellite receiver other than those that are also DVRs. In any case, the second tuner of a DT TiVo cannot be used with satellite - it is for unscrambled analog cable only.

But yes, you can have satellite and cable on the box and the TiVo will sort it out.
Oh yea. At least with DISH. I haven't researched DTV as much. Every new install with DISH is using Dual Tuner boxes.

Thanks for the info.
Any DirecTv receiver, plain or Tivo or their "new" models discussed at the other forum, will work ONLY with a DirecTv signal

As far as I know, they do not have tuners that will work with any other brand of signal
From what I've been told it's a matter of how the sat. box is hooked up to the TIVO. If you use the digital signal output in whatever flavor you have there there are a lot of limitations. But if you use the analog output (RCA) any sat. box will work with any TIVO. However, then I was told that the Series 3 won't work with satellite... even tho it DOES have RCA jack inputs. So I've gotten conflicting info on that.

Also... DISH and DTV boxes apparantly have enabled their network ports now. Since 1-2 months ago for DISH. So the question is if they are connected to the PC now why can you just https:// into the IP and copy recordings over?? Not saying anything about how to burn them yet.

Where did you get conflicting instructions? Go the the section of the forum the deals with the Series 3 and Tivo HD and everyone will give you the same answer. Doesn't work with satellite. Cable and OTA only.

I don't follow Dish so I have no idea. And I don't think that D* will ever do that in a supported fashion. Just think of their customer support issues. Most people can't work their remote much less connect a DVR to the network. The D* CSRs are barely able to help the average user.

Yes, the network ports on the DirecTV boxes are "activated". That does not mean you can do everything you can possibly imagine over a network interface.

Right now, the network port's primary use is for "music and pictures" a la TiVo HMO. It also can contact the DirecTV servers this way, though right now it seems to be to only a "hi, there" communication. DirecTV is testing a video-on-demand service that requires a network connection.

DirecTV has stated in press releases that it intends to offer multi-room viewing and some form of interchange with PCs, but no details as of yet. Today, there is absolutely no method (that I am aware of) of transferring shows from a DirecTV DVR to any other device over the network connection.

I mean... I'm told it's a compatibility issue with their digital signals... but if you just use the analog RCA jacks out from the sat/cable box the TIVO will work IF it has RCA input... (which I think all TIVOS have). That's why I was wondering why it wouldn't work IF you used the RCA jacks... which they all have.

What's the general reason that TC seems to only support DTV?? Is it mainly just b/c they're the only ones that made the DTV/TIVO sat. box with TiVO? I've done a bit of research and I think DISH is better in a lot of ways. DTV just advertises more yet remarkably DTV has 15 million subscribers and DISH 13. So it's pretty close in spite of the huge marketing campaign they carrry out.

The HD units (TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD) do not have inputs for anything but OTA/Cable.

The most recent TiVos (Series 2 Dual Tuner, Series 3, and TiVo HD) have features which only work with Cable (S2DT, S3, THD) or OTA (S3, THD) and in fact the S3 and THD can only be used with Cable or OTA. DirecTV used to offer an integrated TiVo unit which has features you cannot get from a standalone unit with DirecTV (namely dual tuners) therefore most of the coverage on this site has to do with cable on the standalones and DirecTV when discussing satellite.
Ah... you're right. I see now the analogs are OUT only.

DISH just isn't popular at all around here I guess.

This is all pretty complex.. for me. I made another thread b/c I thought the waters were really muddy. But I really only have one basic question, which I made the other thread for, and you seem to be really knowledgable. I see you have already been in that thread too. AND both are now in the wrong forum as you're telling me. But I still haven't gotten the basic question answered yet. And so far it's not looking good. Like on standalone devices there's no way I can view HD on my tv with a non-HD TIVO. I can hook the TV right up to the HD-sat box but then I won't be able to see what the TIVO is doing unless I can use the diff. tuners to switch from one input to another or something. I'm clueless. I really want to be able to have sat HD but a TIVO too.

Not in the "DirecTV Receiver with TiVo" forum section. If you go to one of the other forum sections devoted to standalone TiVos, you'll find more DISH users. There is no solution that combines DISH, HD and TiVo, however.
I think you are being confused by all the different Tivo models. Within the DirecTV integrated models, only the HR10 (tivo) and HR20 (non-tivo) have DIGITAL OTA tuners. All of the other DTivo's are 100% DTV only.

For the stand-alone ("SA") tivos, only one model has dual tuners... the S2DT. It supports a split tuning mode where the two inputs can be setup independantly... antenna, or cable via RF, or cable, DISH, or DTV (S1's used to support C-Band "big dish" too) via a composite or svideo input.

The HD Tivo's ("Series 3", and "Tivo HD") support antenna and cable (RF) inputs only -- both analog and digital. There are no "line-in" inputs at all -- yes, people have complained about that; no, it's not going to change. There's also no RF output -- channel 3/4 switchable TV output.
