how do you tell a RCN Tivo from a regular Tivo?

Is the RCN Tivo marked on the back with RCN, and is the serial number system different?

It had an "RCN" logo on the front.
I'll also bet it has some kind of "Property of RCN" sticker on the back as well

It also won't have Netflix, Amazon, etc.

They probably have their own TSN range.

Can you use a RCN box just like a normal tivo? If so how ?

A RCN TiVo works the same except RCN provides the software updates and it disables apps like Netflix. You can even add it to your TiVo account to use it with MRV and the iPad app, etc.
