How can I keep Track of TIVO promotions?

My TIVO died and they want a ton of money to transfer the lifetime subscription to an exchanged unit for the detective box. I am surprised at how much money it is.

My understanding is that there has been promotions in the past that you can transfer your service for a lower cost.

Does TIVO have a promotional alert email list or is there a website that keep tracks of when these promotions happen?

Get on TiVo's email list for notices of sales, etc., and follow promotions here. There likely will be Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions coming up in the next few days--watch for listings of them here.

For your present issue (getting a replacement box with a Lifetime transfer, at a lower charge), that's not covered by a typical "promotion"--it's something that TiVo does with broken machines on a case-by-case basis. People have gotten deals for a replacement box and Lifetime transfer from $0 to $149 or $199. It helps to make a strong and sympthetic case with the TiVo customer service rep.--e.g. being a long-term customer, having spent a lot on TiVo products, the break-down being right after the warranty ran out, etc.

I would buy a used or refurb lifetime for way less, always much better value and since they retain it also, your net out of pocket over the long-term is lower. Check out local marketplaces or online. I purchased a Roamio Pro lifetime with two TiVo minis for $325

How long ago did your TiVo die?

Typically the lifetime transfer promotions have run some time in the April-Sept timeframe (for about a month) and require the TiVo to have connected within the previous year.

Aside from lightning strike a typical failure mode for a TiVo is the hard drive and the cheapest option in that event is a replacement drive.

Well, I don't think its the hard drive because I replaced the hard drive and it has the same issues. I don't know if there was a lightning strike or an EMP cased by lightning near by. The motherboard look normal to me but it has all sorts of strange issues.

I connected a VOLT meter to the power supply and I'm reading the correct volts at least. Do you know if a power supply can be bad but still produce the correct voltage?

Still, No ability to connect to Internet(gives a router error message), yellow light stays sold after reset so I can't try the kickstart codes method.

There was lightning storm one time and HDMI stopped working but TIVO functioned more or less OK for over the next year.

I would love to do any troubleshooting if anyone has any suggestions.

Power supply issues can provide the right voltage, but not the current needed. So, testing the voltage under load would be a better measure. Low current can cause hard drives to not operate properly, or other issues. They are relatively cheap, and if you were hit by lightening is certainly an item that could have been damaged while appearing to operate properly.

$200 to transfer it plus additional money for the "exchange fee"

This is on top of the money originally paid for the lifetime and box which flaked out on me.

What model died? What model is TiVo offering? Hard to provide relevant feedback to you without more info.

This, 100%. Got a replacement Roamio Plus on fleabay after mine got killed by lightning a couple years ago. Don't mess around with Tivo if they won't give you a good replacement deal.
