My 77 yr old dad who is fighting cancer right now, purchased a new TiVo box. My son tried to help him set it up yesterday only to find out we needed a new media card(so something like that) in order to transfer information from the old box to the new one. Now my dad can't record his favorite shows - can you help?

If you need a CableCard, call the cable company and have them install one.

On the back of the TiVo where the power cord plugs in is a sticker and on the sticker is the model number of the TiVo. It should start with TCD (unless it's one of the ones that are also DirectTV recievers, or early non-satellite models made by Sony or Philips.

Post back here with the model numbers of his old and new TiVos and that'll help us figure out what's going on.
Also, we need to know if your dad subscribes to cable or uses an antenna and what goes wrong when he tries to record.

scandia101 suggests that your Dad's old (and/or new) TiVo is a TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD or TiVo Premiere, all of which can take a "CableCARD" that is supplied by a cable company to allow the TiVo to take the place of a digital cable box. If the old TiVo did have a CableCARD inserted (usually a slot in the back), then the cable company will need to supply a new one for the new TiVo or fix it such that the old card can be transferred.

You wrote about "transfer information", but it is not clear to me what you mean. Unless both TiVos are connected to your dad's home network, information such as shows, season passes, etc. cannot be transferred. Any information such as Season Passes and favorite channels would have to be reentered.

You also said that he can't record, which suggests that either the new box is not set up properly or that it needs a CableCARD.

As you may see, we'd like to help but need more information about what the situation is.

You should start your own thread in the Help Forum about your problem and leave this one for the problems of the person who started this one.

Try to come up with a title (headline) that succinctly describes the problem and then elaborate in the post itself. You want the title to catch the eye of those who know something about how to solve your problem.

Go here

and click the bluish "New Thread" button on the left right above the black bar.

Or you might consider starting a new thread in the TiVo Home Media Features forum

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Same blue button, same place on page.

Okay, depending on your OS and browser, it might not be a *black* bar.

Is your Dad using DirectTV or DishTV and you are referring to an access card?
