I need some help with a problem I'm having. I just pulled my 120 GB that use to be in my T60 to use it in a computer. Now that my T60 is being used just for a kids TiVo, there's no need for a large drive.

So I dropped in the virgin original drive, and now I can't get it to update the software. Not only that, it keeps telling me that it hasn't downloaded all the guide data. This will last for days, and I can't seem to get it to the point to where it will download new code.

Could it be how I'm running guided setup and what type of dish I'm choosing? Right now I have a 5 LNB dish so I'm not sure what to choose. I wish I would have done a backup before I pulled the 120, but I didn't.

Any ideas?

Your old software is too old to automatically update via the phone line -- I know, I tried with my DSR6000. Your cheapest solution is to use MFS tools to make a backup of the 120 gb drive which has the latest software and restore this to the 40 gb drive from the sony series 1 dtivo.

If you have already used the bigger drive in your PC I would buy DVRupgrade's Instantcake which now works on smaller drives and use that to create a near current if not current image for the kid's Tivo. :)

Can't make a backup, the drive has already been wiped.

Phone line is hooked up and making daily calls fine. My quess is that the version of software is so old, it's not recognized as a version that needs to be updated. I hate to pay for something (instantcake) that I should get for free.

I think your original drive had version prior to 2.5. Versions prior to 2.5 received new software via the phone line. Newer software versions get the new software from the sat and then call in to get "permission" to activate the new release.

In your case I think the old update servers you were able to reach via the phone line or no longer in production or your local access numbers can't reach them.

I think now that your cheapest option is InstantCake as been mentioned previously.
