You would need two satellite boxes to watch and record at the same time. One box would be dedicated to the TiVo. The other you would use for watching live TV. Each would need to be connected to a different input on you TV or Home Theater system.
Help - Tivo subscriber with New DirectTV
I've had Tivo for 8 months with regular Time Warner cable. I just switched to Direct TV. The guys who came over to install it decided to tell me that their DVR service was better than Tivo, so they hooked it up.
Come to find out, a) their DVR sucks compared to Tivo....hands down.
b) if I want to use my Tivo, I can't record a show and watch something else at the same time.
I asked a Tivo person about this, and she told me in not so many words to come to this website and seek your help. Apparently she's not legally allowed to tell me how to hook up my Tivo with my Direct TV to get it to work the way it worked before with Time Warner.
Can somebody please help me out?

There has got to be another way. I cannot record anything and watch live tv at the same time.
Your only option is a DirecTivo from Weaknees, Ebay or a private seller. Ebay and private sales are subject to fraud. If there is a balance on the owner's account, D* will not activate the unit no matter who has posession of it. You should get the receiver number and check it with D* before purchasing. So satellite providers don't use Tivo boxes anymore? Sorry but I have been out of the loop and just today cancelled my Charter cable TV service.
Before HD you could hook a Tivo up to any cable or sat box and record a show. With HD you can't do that anymore for technical reasons. Tivo's HD boxes only work with cable. If you want to stick with Directv or Dish then you should get a DVR from Dish\Directv. Neither Dish nor Directv currently offer a 'real' Tivo. There are old DirecTivo's that do still work with Directv. You could buy one of those used but it will not get any HD channels from Directv.
There's no way to "hack" it? The Tivo lady was saying something to that effect to the point where she wouldn't get in trouble for mentioning it.

All 3 options have already been mentioned above.
Hacking a DirecTivo will enable some features that are disabled from the factory - like Multiroom Vieweing - but that's about it.
If you have a HDTV with built-in ATSC tuner, then you could always switch over to an Over The Air broadcast while your DirectTV DVR or DirecTivo records something from satellite.

The TiVo lady was simply not doing her job and pushing the support to this forum. Sounds like a slacker. The three options above are your choices. If it has to be DTV and has to be Tivo, your best choice is to acquire an integrated box.kcincy30 said:There's no way to "hack" it? 1) installs fakecall which removes the nag screens if you don't have a landline connected.
2) removes copy protection on recorded programs, allowing you to copy them over a USB-to-ethernet connection to your PC as regular mpeg2 files.
3) allows multi-room viewing, allowing you to move/copy any program from one Tivo to another that is connected to your home network.
Look on Ebay for a "directv r10". I just did, and there are a bunch of them. This is the Directv receiver with a true Tivo interface. I have three, and two more in the garage as backups. Get the receiver ID from the seller and call Directv and make sure that the box can be put in your name. Then buy it and do so. This is exactly what I would do in your situation, unless there's something that I don't know about which would cause this plan not to work.
