I just downloaded TIVO desktop ver 2.5 as I started getting a strange error when I tried to start ver 2.4a. Everything worked fine until I tried to start TIVO desktop a couple of weeks ago to xfer some movies to my computer. Everything had worked just fine and I xfered about a dozen movies using ver. 2.4a. About two weeks ago when I tried to start TIVO desk top I got an error message saying "UNABLE TO START TIVO DESKTOP! DATA OF THIS TYPE NOT SUPPORTED". I called tech support and was bumped to their second level who told me to call my computer mfg. because no one else had called with a similar complant. I have a 3 GH dual core Dell XPS with 2 GB ram and 250GB HD. I tried uninstalling 2.4a and editing the reg under LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE & CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE to remove all traces of DT 2.4a before installing ver 2.5. After installing with AV shut off and restarting I get the same error. I checked under Admin Services and the TIVO Beacon is running. If I try to run TIVO Server Properties I get the same error.

Dell answer was to restore the system to a point more than two week ago when the system was working. If I did I would lose all saved date from the restore point forward plus I am not sure of the exact date I last ran TIVO desk top.

Not so. I have been having this same problem since going from Tivo Desktop 2.x to 2.2. I just tried installing Tivo Desktop 2.5.1 and get the same errors: When trying to start the desktop software, I get "Tivo Desktop Error, Unable to begin Tivo desktop, Data of this type is not supported." When I try to restart the Tivo Server, I get an error "Tivo Server Error, Data of this type is not supported." and another error after a few seconds stating "Tivo Desktop: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

I've done restores, de-installs, reinstalls to current and back rev'd versions, and have spent hours on the phone with Tivo support over the last year or so. If ANYONE has a clue as to how to get around this, it would be nice to have my Tivo Desktop back.
