Help Recoding From Now Playing To Dvd Recorder

1061 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  martink0646
I am having some problems recording from my now playing menu to my dvd recorder. Not sure i got it wired up correctly.

Here's my setup. VCR (TIVO)---------------SCART DVD RECORDER OUT
TV--------------------------TIVO (TV)
CABLE BOX (VCR)-------SCART IN DVD RECORDER
CABLE BOX (TV)----------AUX (TIVO)

I have a Samsung cable box and i can view dvds no problem using the bypass on
the tivo.

I tried to record but was only getting from my cable.

Can anyone help with the proper setup as its just wires everywhere to me.

Cheers, Clare

If your DVD recorder has two scart sockets it best on the TV out of Tivo

TIVO TV OUT -> DVD Recorder In - DVD Recorder Out -> TV

It then gets a RGB signal and in standby just lets the signal travel through the DVD Recorder.

Automan.

Hi Clare. Mine's almost the same, but not quite.
Cable Box TV -> Tivo AUX
Tivo VCR -> DVD TV In
Tivo TV -> TV

I did try mine Automan's way but didn't like it for some reason. Can't remember why now, but it did work :)

Hi Carl & Clare,

I did have it your way originally Carl, but switched to Automan's way (did he invent it? :) :) ) & the difference in picture quality is huge. If you are using the DVDR for long term archiving I would suggest that this is a must. The setup in the first reply, as mentioned, is RGB. The way you are attempting to set it up is composite only. It just shows how old TiVo is now that the VCR socket only outputs composite (as the title suggests). Persevere with Automan's setup, it is worth it.

Regards,

Martin
Yeah. Not sure why I didn't like it. Anyway, I don't do much permanent archiving anyway. We'll see :)
Thanks everyone, will try that as soon as.

Its not really a question of Tivo's age. In a SCART connection most signals can be input and output at the same time using different dedicated pins. Unfortunately there aren't enough pins for RGB to have both input and output (which I think is SCART showing its age) so you have to choose which direction to support. At the time when Tivo was adapted for the UK there were no DVD recorders so passing through RGB allowed both a DVD player and Tivo to use the (usually single) RGB SCART socket on the TV. Of course time has passed but I still think that being able to record out RGB on the VCR SCART but not pass RGB back through Tivo to the TV would have been a mistake.

At least with the suggested wiring you can get an RGB recording and playback from the DVD recorder AND add a further RGB input on the Tivo VCR SCART.

My expensive SCART switcher has a similar dimlema - four RGB inputs (which can also output composite and S-video), one RGB/S-Video/composite output only to the TV and an fifth socket that will OUTPUT RGB for a DVD recorder (or in my case projector) and accept composite or S-video in or out but not RGB in.

Having typed this I'm not sure even I care now but I've typed it so I'll post...:)

Hi AMc,

Thats what I meant really, but thanks for the info on SCART. I didn't know that was the reason.
