I have a Hughes DirecTV/TiVo Series 2 receiver. I expanded the recording capacity a couple of years ago with a kit from Weaknees. In recent months I have been getting weak to no signal on satellite input 2, which I assumed was because of trees impeding on my dish's southern view, but I'm not 100% sure of that. In the last few weeks my receiver has been occasionally rebooting itself. I also noticed a few weeks ago that I went through a few days where my keyword searches were showing no results at all when they should have been showing something. Now last night my receiver rebooted itself and then froze. Today it was still frozen, so I unplugged it, waited a few seconds and plugged it back in. Since then it reboots, shows a few seconds to a few minutes of TV and then reboots again. It seems to reboot about three consecutive times before it freezes, I unplug it and replug it and then the cycle starts over again. I have been able to get in to my now playing list and start playing one of my saved programs for a few seconds before the reboot starts. I was also able to get in to my system information and it says it is running software version 6.3e.

DirecTV's technical service person was useless. Can anyone here tell me what is wrong and what to do about it? Thank you in advance and I apologize for my ignorance. I just didn't know where else to turn. I have programs on that hard drive that are very important to me and I don't want to lose them.

So if the hard drive is failing does that mean I will lose all the programs recorded on it? I don't suppose there are people who can recover it?
If the hard drive has not yet failed go to MFSlive.org download the free MFSlive Boot cd version 1.3b Then purchase new Harddisk and copy your old to the new drive. If you have not yet expanded your drive you can expand it once otherwise order the same size drive. Good Luck. if this fails then you can order Instantcake if it succeeds you have your old shows. :)

Thanks for the advice. I think that will have to wait until after I move to figure it out, unless you think it is something that should be done immediately in order to work. For now, I've just unplugged the whole box. Which means no TV for me. But I need to be packing up my apartment anyway.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether now would be a good time to upgrade to HD since I'm moving? I took a quick look at Weaknees to see what HD DirecTiVo receivers go for and I was shocked at the prices. Are there moving or upgrade deals for current DirecTV customers that I should know about? And do DirecTV's HD receivers suck as badly as their standard def receivers?

You will need to go to the other forum for DirecTV's house brand
http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=82

If you want any FUTURE HiDef programming, you must use their brand

You might find a used HR10-250 on eBay
Where do I buy a DirecTv Tivo? BEFORE you buy a used DTivo,
get the ID Number from the seller and call DirecTv to ensure
there is not an outstanding balance on the seller's account,
since DirecTV will NOT activate such a receiver!
