“The copyright holder of this video does not allow it to be viewed on an unsecured device connected with an HDMI cable. If you were trying to watch this video using an HDMI cable connected to a TV, that TV is not correctly supporting HDCP (HD copy protection) and you will need to switch to using a different cable.”

Is this due to firmware update?

other than a reboot following swapping cables, that's all i've got.

curious, does hdmi status in system info show hdcp as being supported on tivo?

When it's connected directly from TV to Tivo it shows HDCP 1.x enabled but when it's plugged from TV to receiver it shows HDCP not enabled.
excellent work troubleshooting, but, unfortunately, i think you've identified the issue - the receiver. :(

which make/model is it?

the reason i asked for the make/model of the receiver was to investigate which hdmi & hdcp it supported, and whether or not there was a reset function available.

iirc, this happened once to my sony 7.1 receiver, and a reset cleared it up.

So receiver is the issue for connecting with TV and Tivo but working with other devices? Do you think this means the receiver is useless? UGH
no, your 7.2 receiver isn't useless, but i had no way of knowing the age or specs without the model number - i love pioneer, and you've got a nice, powerful, and feature-rich receiver. ;)

yes, after trying every hdmi input (including the front input), if there's no change, my next step would be a hard reset (page 55 of the advanced manual):

OK did a hard reset and still got the error message. If the problem is the receiver, any ideas how to resolve? I just don't get how these troubleshooting steps works for others but nothing is working for me. I hate to not utilize my sound system when I spent so much on it.

i'd start by checking the manufacturer's forum to see if anyone else is having trouble (i already checked for a firmware update, there isn't one for your model), then i'd create a thread with your issue if you can't find an existing thread.

is the receiver under warranty? i agree, you've made a considerable investment in the receiver alone, it would be extremely disappointing if replacement was the only solution.
