I have a TiVo Series 3 connected via HDMI to a Sharp HDTV. I have another HDTV in another room which is close to the room where the TiVo Series 3 is located. It would require a cable run (either HDMI or Component) of about 30-40 feet. I would like to connect the TiVo to both TVs simultaneously, one via HDMI and one via component. Is this possible? It has been suggested to me that if a cable is plugged into the HDMI port, that the Component outputs are disabled (having something to do with DRM). Is this right? Is there any way to do what I want to do (connect to TVs to the TiVo at the same time)?

Both the component (YPbPr) and HDMI outputs are active at all times. We have basically the same setup on our S3...HDMI to one LCD and component to another LCD in another room. HDMI is reported to be good to about 50' without degradation/loss of signal and component much longer. Of course you'll also need an audio connection to go with the screen using the component output.

This can happen sometimes when the HDMI set is connected but powered off. Some TVs or receivers will go !connected when off which is ok while others go connected but not enabled which is bad.

Again, this only happens for protected content.

I'm sorry to be obtuse, but I do not understand this. Are you saying that if the TV connected via HDMI is powered off, the component outputs are disabled?

Sometimes yes, if the program is copy protected. It depends on how the off TV handles the HDCP negotiation in the off state. Some work, others don't. I have personally seen this with Sony TVs.

This is wrong. He will have no problems watching cci 0x0 content, but 0x2 content will be unwatchable. Depending on your cable system, this may encompass anything from just PPV to every single non-OTA channel available.

You can always buy a component splitter; monoprice has them for $6.48.

We never said everyone will have a problem. There are clearly, though, many sets that do. It has everything do do with how the HDMI device handles the HDCP negotiation when it is powered off.

I'll bet there are many people who can state they have no problems. And just as many who do.

I'm knee deep in tears about this very problem right now. I have a Sony TV in the family room, and a Denon 4306 AV receiver hooked up to a BenQ projector in the home theater in the basement. I have an upgraded TivoHD (1 TB) that I want to watch in either room. It is a 60 ft run, so I purchased a long HDMI cable, short HDMI cable and an HDMI extender. 3 nights of struggling, moving the TivoHD upstairs, downstairs, component on TV with HDMI on Denon, component on Denon with HDMI on TV, RF remotes, blah blah blah. I still get the TivoHD screen complaining about HDMI issues. I'm not doing anything illegal. Clearly HDCP is acting more draconian than is warranted here.

Long story short, count me in the 'having problems' camp.

The best procedure to troubleshoot is to first rule out the long HDMI cable as a source of the problem. Physically move the TiVo near your HDMI device. Connect your component/composite device as well.

See if you get "Can't view on this input" error on your component/composite device when the HDMI device is connected but turned off. See if the error on the component/composite goes away when the HDMI device is turned on. If the error on your component/composite device goes away then you are in the camp of those whose HDMI device is not 'properly' (term used gently) negotiating the HDCP protocol when turned off. Some solutions are to insert an HDMI switch or HDMI reveiver in between the TiVo and the HDMI TV.
