HD XL - on the way out??

Hi everyone,

My HDXL was working fine, everything was great for 14 months. Last week, we decided that we could live without TiVo and opted for the Comcast AnyRoom DVR (no monthly fee for my package). I expected a bad design, but for $13 a month we'll survive.

Fast forward to yesterday, after 3 missed recordings (honestly records, then you play back, gets half way, then the program is gone... unreal) wifey pushed for the Tivo to be enabled again. I connect it up, all was good. Ran to the guided setup routine again (to add the cable channels) and here, it would go to load the data it downloaded, then reboot and you then continue setup again, where it rebooted, and cycle again and again. I figure the drive might be bad, so I use mfstools, get a 1.5gb seagate installed, and everything is working from a virgin image. Go through the setup, everything is fast fast.

We now have the TiVO back online, cablecard working, but one annoying issue. When you go to play a program, or switch to Live TV from now playing list the screen goes black for about 5 seconds, then the video appears. I'm using HDMI, but I've tried component with same issue. We can live with it, just weird its happening like that. Any thoughts? Is the HD XL starting to give up the ghost?

I bet that's your TV switching between resolutions - the menus are all 480i while your HD content is 720p or 1080i. Try switching the HD's video output format from "Native" to "720p fixed" or "1080i fixed".

(Apropos of this, I wish there was a setting that output 1080i content in 1080i and everything below in 720p)

What happens if you deselect all resolutions except those two?
You cannot unselect resolutions on the TiVo HD/XL, only the Premiere.
ah. Didn't know. My THD is connected to an old TV.

Huh? You can definitely uncheck resolutions your tv doesn't accept. The original poster can set their TiVo to fixed output to stop the resolution switching. This is certainly possible with the TiVo HD.

Please follow along. With the Premier (apparently - I haven't seen one first-hand) you can select which resolutions you want to let the TiVo choose from, and it will automatically choose the closest best fit. This is also how you select output resolutions on the Scientific Atlanta DVR's that my carrier provides.

But the TiVo HD resolution selection uses different options, and there is no way to choose both (and only) 720p and 1080i and have it automatically switch between those two. Instead, you have to accept that either the 720p content from FOX, ESPN, et al, is going to be converted to 1080i, or the 1080i content from almost every other HD channel is going to be converted to 720p.

Personally I choose 1080i Fixed, but occasionally I'll switch back to Native if I want to watch fast-moving sports like auto racing, where 720p can work better.

BTW, I misspoke earlier - the TiVoHD menus are 720p, not 480i. They just look like they're 480i!

I'll give this a go tonight. I'm thinking its set to a hybrid mode, but will verify and change to fixed 1080i tonight.
BTW, the FCC now requires that if they bundle a cable box in your programming package you should receive a credit for the value of that if you decline the box.

Yes, I know how it works. I was stating that you can set it to fixed mode to either 720p or 1080i so you don't get the resolution change on your tv. Hybrid mode may also be useful if you watch mostly HD but want to output SD at 480i/p.

..
When I had my TiVo HD/S3 boxes I had it selected as 720P and 1080i(there should also a 480p/i option too). So with 1080i content it would output 1080i and 720P content it would output 720P. The only difference with the premiere is that it gives you a 1080P24 option too.

I've always used native resolution output. I think my HDTiVos with DirecTV even had it too.
@eccles thanks! I set it to 1080i, no more delays. I could have sworn it was on hybrid prior to my disconnect and reconnect, but I'm not certain.

I've always been 'challenged' in figuring out the output resolution. I'm the guy that cant stand the bars when watching a program, so I like to stretch the image (I know it looks horrid, just a weird thing with me). I've figured out that if a program is SD then just use the SD channel to record and it will stretch. I always thought I could stretch a program from a HD channel, which does not work. So, let's say 'big brother' which is SD from CBS, you play it on the HD CBS feed it is centered with black bars. I thought I could stretch that to fill the screen, but it does not appear to work.

One day everything will be in HD right?

@nrc - did not know that. They charge $19.95 a month for the AnyRoom dvr. It was free in my package, now they keep the dvr and charge me $6.95 for the cable card. I'll make a call today.

Thanks guys!

The TiVo won't let you zoom an HD source, but your TV might. My Sharp LCD offers several zoom options even when the input is 1080i, one of which is perfect for expanding letterboxed SD content to full-screen, and another which would stretch pillarboxed content in the manner you prefer.

For HD programming, change the TV aspect ratio on the Tivo to 4:3 and then aspect ratio correction will be functional.
Thanks guys - combination of tv and tivo adjustment, and stretched content is now available.
IMHO, I hate the look of the stretched out aspect in video.

I got used to it, don't even notice it anymore. I'm waiting for the day when everything is HD 16:9.
