What happens if you deselect all resolutions except those two?(Apropos of this, I wish there was a setting that output 1080i content in 1080i and everything below in 720p)
Huh? You can definitely uncheck resolutions your tv doesn't accept. The original poster can set their TiVo to fixed output to stop the resolution switching. This is certainly possible with the TiVo HD.You cannot unselect resolutions on the TiVo HD/XL, only the Premiere.
Please follow along. With the Premier (apparently - I haven't seen one first-hand) you can select which resolutions you want to let the TiVo choose from, and it will automatically choose the closest best fit. I'll give this a go tonight. I'm thinking its set to a hybrid mode, but will verify and change to fixed 1080i tonight.I bet that's your TV switching between resolutions - the menus are all 480i while your HD content is 720p or 1080i. Try switching the HD's video output format from "Native" to "720p fixed" or "1080i fixed".

Yes, I know how it works. I was stating that you can set it to fixed mode to either 720p or 1080i so you don't get the resolution change on your tv. Hybrid mode may also be useful if you watch mostly HD but want to output SD at 480i/p.But the TiVo HD resolution selection uses different options, and there is no way to choose both (and only) 720p and 1080i and have it automatically switch between those two. Instead, you have to accept that either the 720p content from FOX, ESPN, et al, is going to be converted to 1080i, or the 1080i content from almost every other HD channel is going to be converted to 720p.
When I had my TiVo HD/S3 boxes I had it selected as 720P and 1080i(there should also a 480p/i option too). So with 1080i content it would output 1080i and 720P content it would output 720P. The only difference with the premiere is that it gives you a 1080P24 option too.Please follow along. The TiVo won't let you zoom an HD source, but your TV might. My Sharp LCD offers several zoom options even when the input is 1080i, one of which is perfect for expanding letterboxed SD content to full-screen, and another which would stretch pillarboxed content in the manner you prefer.I'm the guy that cant stand the bars when watching a program, so I like to stretch the image (I know it looks horrid, just a weird thing with me). I've figured out that if a program is SD then just use the SD channel to record and it will stretch. I always thought I could stretch a program from a HD channel, which does not work. So, let's say 'big brother' which is SD from CBS, you play it on the HD CBS feed it is centered with black bars. I thought I could stretch that to fill the screen, but it does not appear to work.

I got used to it, don't even notice it anymore. I'm waiting for the day when everything is HD 16:9.IMHO, I hate the look of the stretched out aspect in video.
