HD TV with no STB Tivo HD?

974 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  vstone
Right now I get the main networks HD channels on my HD TV with no STB. Currently to see these I need to change the source of the signal to bypass my Series 2. If I get a new Tivo HD will I need to get cable cards to continue to receive these channels?

Thanks!

You can view those with a S3 or TiVo HD, however, you will not get guide data for them unless you get CableCards. This means, you could only do manual recordings on those channels without CableCards.
Okay so will I be able to get the cable cards without Comcast's digital package? I'm a bit strapped right now and don't want that much of an added expense yet.

Thanks

Luckily, I have Charter and they let me get CableCards without the digital package. I can get the HD tier which gives me ESPN HD, TNT HD, etc. My cost over extended basic would be about $14 more. For only $1.99x2, I can get just the local HDs. I am not sure how Comcast works though.
I'm thinking I might be able to do the same thing. Guess I'll stop by the local cable office after work and find out. Don't want to have to do this over the phone if I don't have to.

thanks for your help.
Unless your TV has a coax out like mine (EDTV Panny plasma), the first thing I would do is get a GOOD cable splitter (-3.5 dB or less), so both your TV and your Tivo (of whatever flavor) both have acontinuous feed. When the cable tech shows up, ask him to verify signal levels. He might have clinb the pole and increase your gain. My family room coax splits to a feed to the TV and a feed to my S3. Out of the TV the signal is sent to an SA8300HD. Somewhere in there is another splitter that feeds an S2, but I don't remeber where. I hope to get rid of the SA8300HD and S2 eventually, but they all work fine for now.

Comacst may require the digital tier to get cablecards.
