I set up my S3 with the wireless adapter from the start. No phone line.

You can use a phone line OR an ethernet connection OR buy the usb wireless adapter if you have a wireless network at home.

Nope. It will use the network connection.

I haven't had a landline for 3 years, my TiVo works perfectly over wireless.
