On Amazon right now one can get a Series 3 for $399 after rebates. I assume that they are clearing out the 3 in favor of the HD. The HD is $269 or something. I was thinking that the HD would be reasonable just as an HD tuner, since the only other OTA digital tuner available is almost $200.

I have had a Serie 2 since january hooked up to an 'HD ready' lcd set. A playstation 3 is hooked up to the single hdmi port on this Samsung unit. Good picture, but only an ntsc tuner.

What does the Serie 3 offer over the HD? Is it more solidly built? As in, heavier? I like that.

The Series3 is a couple of pounds heavier. The cover is "glossy" on the Series3 vs "flat" the TiVo HD. Its really personal preference which is nicer looking, but its pretty obvious that the "glossy" cover has the potential of looking sharper; but it also shows fingerprints and smudges very easily.

The most notable difference, as mentioned by the previous poster, is the larger capacity and the front-panel display.

Oh and one more thing - the Series3 comes with a glo-remote, the TiVo HD does not (but it can be purchased separately).

I went from a Series2 Single Tuner 40Hr to a Series3... what I gained was amazing... the ability to have actor wishlists filled with movies (I have around 30 movies featuring my favorite actors) and amazing HD. My recommendation is to load as much storage capacity in either one, as you really get the most out of a Tivo that way. So, if you are wondering about which to go with, I say S3 as you get more recording space without having to modify the box.

Someday I will load the S3 to its maximum, and not even have to worry about TTG except for putting stuff on the ipod, until then, I have more than enough space and get to see all that I want!

One other difference between HD and S3 is that S3 has two sets of video/audio outputs. The HD version only has one.

This is probably not and issue for 99% of users, but was a bit of a problem for me since I use the second set of outputs to broadcast TiVo to other TV sets using Avcast video sharing.

Totally the case. I went from a 30GB ipod and a 60GB PC heading off to school with more space than I could imagine to a 60GB ipod, 120GB laptop recently upgraded to 250GB, a 150GB HDD now added a 500GB HDD. The 60GB PS3 HDD is next, but I am gonna wait until I can get 200+ for a good price.

storage capacity is rediculous, but so is the amount of space I now "need" for my electronics, haha.
