I have a HD ready Sony Flat screen TV, and would like to get HD. The TV does not have a built in receiver. Direct TV has offered me a HD DVR for $199 with a 2 year contract. I presently have a Tivo DVR unit which I like and have had no problem with the unit. I would like for someone to advise me on what they think about the Direct TV's HD DVR they are selling. I read somewhere that the Direct TV's HD DVR unit is not as good as the Tivo DVR. I am new at this so hopefully I made myself clear. I also would like to know what does one mean when they list HD DVR POS.
Are they describing a particular unit?

Thanks for all replys.

You will find that opinions differ wildly about the DirecTV DVRs. I have both TiVo and DirecTV brand high DEF DVRs and, while they are different, they're both good. You really have no choice today if you're using DirecTV - the DirecTV brand DVR is the only one that will get the new high definition channels that they are launching now.

The DirecTV model is HR20.

POS = Piece of <expletive deleted>

The reality is that it's not that bad, but it is NOT a TiVo. So much so that DirecTV has announced that they're going to work with TiVo to produce their next generation DVR. The problem is that, as a DirecTV customer, your choices are limited: Either (1) find their old DVR (the HR-10) on eBay, because it is a TiVo, and get DirecTV to activate IT for you, (2) live with their lesser DVR (the HR-20), or (3) leave DirecTV, switching to cable and get the fantastic TiVo S3 or the TiVo HD DVR.

Did I miss something or are you just making things up. Where's the link? me thinks you're in some kind of dream state.

To the OP, visit the HD forum on this site and www.dbstalk.com In addition to what you learn about the DVR's, you will discover that almost nobody is paying $199 for the unit now. It can be had for free with a little work and $99 simply by asking anyone in retention.

Bicker is just engaging in wishful thinking. No such thing has been announced,

Here's the link, for what I was referring to:

Not a "next generation" but rather an update.... sorry for the confusion. Serves me right for relying solely on memory.

Wait until I offer it Bicker.

I read that article. Although I don't recognize the source, that's unimportant. i don't see anywhere in there where it says " DirecTV has announced that they're going to work with TiVo to produce their next generation DVR".

All I see is the dated news about the HR10 update. Am I still missing it or are you glorifying it?

yes that update to the software was offiically anounced.

this added fuel to the rumors of a TiVo - DirectTV active relationship again. Rumors have swirled around this topic quite a bit and even rumors from TiVo directly

TiVo at the Maxim Group Growth Conference

I just listened to the webcast of Tom Rogers, TiVo's CEO, from the Maxim Group Growth Conference. Frankly, there wasn't really anything new - we heard most of it on the last quarterly conference call.

From the Q&A, Comcast had 'Comcast TiVo day' about a week ago, and had about 800 New England region Comcast employees getting revved up for the TiVo roll-out which is imminent.

"Get any song you want" coming soon - any of 3 million songs available on the TiVo, any time. He didn't say the name, but it sounds like the previously announced Real Networks Rhapsody deal.

He made more comments strongly hinting that DirecTV and TiVo may be getting together again once the Liberty Media purchase of DirecTV finalizes later this year.

Not much really.

Please read what you quoted again. Thanks! :)
Help me Bicker, seriously. Was what you wrote ever said or not?

Seems like you're trying to play word games. There's been no announcement that Directv is working with Tivo or anyone else on their next generation DVR.

Unless you've got something more, it's just your hopes and dreams. Your entitled to them.

ETA: Make your last post "More wild speculation" and you'll be on target Bicker.

Bicker is not prone to write "I was wrong" ;) to make it clear but when I read his follow up post with the link to the article on the software update I comprehended that he was taking back "that an official anouncement of working on the next gen box was made" and he had mistakenly thought that from his memory of the software upograde anouncement. Now please stop making me defend Bicker

If Bicker is prone to being stubborn while he's wrong, then you shouldn't defend him. :D

Now that I re-read it, it seems like he edited his post too. It initially said that he "accepted our apologies" (myself and stevel). He must have figured it out and edited before I hit the quote button.

See, now you've got me defending the guy too. :)

Took me a while to catch up to your change. That wasn't the text when I clicked the "Quote" button. I've caught up. :) Serves me right for going on memory as well. ;)
