Have you gotten "the call"?

Just received a phone call from DirecTV and the recorded message announced future enhancements for TiVo based DirecTV DVRs.

Maybe that will clear up the problems I'm having with 6.3e.

Yea, got the dreaded update yesterday. It hung my HR10-250. I mean hung hard.

Had to unplug, count to 30, and power up.

Now at 6.3e.

You know, my BIGGEST complain of my new HR20-100S is the guide. It displays only 2 hours on the screen. I miss the tivo where it shows the next 12+ hours in the right panel.
yes, I got the call yesterday Thurs Aug 24. Now I went to turn on the tv and got a blue screen. Tried rebooting the tivo. Shows rebooting screen and then the almost there then crashes. Does anyone know how to fix this. Or is my tivo gone for good.

The dbstalk.com forums are very useful in answering these questions. If you move the cursor to the left and highlight the channel name/number and hit "info" you'll get a similar screen to the tivo list guide. Not as easy, but good for paging through 2 weeks of programming on a certain channel to see what might be interesting.
I got the call, and I no longer have an HR10-250. The dummies.
I got the call but have not received the update.
I got the call, and I had closed my D* account four months ago. Morons.

My TiVo is already running 8.3...
The update they are referring to on the phone call is not due until early next year. If you're referring to the latest 6.3E that's in the stream that's not the same.

-July 31, 2007--DIRECTV, Inc. (NYSETV), the nation's leading satellite television service provider, and TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ:TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVR), will develop a software upgrade to enhance the user experience for DIRECTV customers who have DIRECTV DVRs with TiVo(R) service built on the Series2(TM) platform.

Launching in early 2008, the new software download will provide these customers with DVR enhancements offered with the TiVo service, including a Recently Deleted Folder and Overlap Protection(TM), as well as DIRECTV's Remote Booking feature. In addition, DIRECTV and TiVo will continue to explore ways to bring future enhancements to DIRECTV customers with TiVo receivers.

Recently Deleted Folder and Overlap Protection(TM),
DIRECTV's Remote Booking feature
What do these mean?

Thanks,
Barry
All of these have TiVo counterparts.

Recently Deleted Folder - think "Recycle Bin" for shows you've deleted. Depending on how much you've recorded since, you may be able to "undelete" recordings

Overlap protection is soft padding of recording times when scheduled times for shows overlap a bit (network programs often do this, starting at 6:59, etc.

Remote Booking is being able to go to a web site and schedule a recording on your DVR.

This last has some people thinking a network connection will be used, but I think it can be delivered over the sat link.
Maybe they'll finally fix the disk full bug in order to implement the recently deleted folder.

Thanks Stevel

It would be great to have online access

I guess it probably could be sent over the sat link, but I wonder if DTV wants to add anything that would consume bandwidth on those existing sat links. In that sense, you go online, schedule your recording, and then the sats start beaming down your scheduling request (along with everyone else's) down to earth. And I would think that they would keep broadcasting it until your DTV/TiVo calls in and says, "I got it". Am I correct on how that would work?

It would make better sense to me if they just implemented what the standalones do. Just check-in every 15-30 minutes, or whatever the interval is, over broadband to see if any scheduling request is waiting. But that would mean firing up those USB ports and having customers plug in one of the wireless adapters.

I got it Friday.
Apropos. ;)
The web scheduling feature wouldn't need a lot of bandwidth. I'm not sure if the TiVo version has any kind of acknowledgment built in, but yes, it could trigger a phone call to ack.

It would certainly make sense, all else being equal, to use a network connection for this, but I can't see enabling the network just for this one feature - it's a major support headache (as it has been for TiVo). For DirecTV's own boxes, they have Ethernet ports that are active so more is possible there.
In addition to the call about a week ago, I got an ad piece in the mail today from D*. Stated the same things the call did about new Tivo features. The title was "New Tivo Features Are On The Way."

The last sentence was interesting: "And know that DIRECTV adn TiVo will continue to explore ways to bring future enhancements to our valued DIRECTV customers with TiVo service. Thank you for being a loyal DIRECTV customer.

I haven't been over to DBSTalk to see what this might imply, but, if D* and TiVo are working on a new replacement for the HR10 that will have MPEG4 capability, I might just wait before pulling the trigger on the HR20. I could put up with not having a few new HD channels for a while if I knew that shortly I could get them with some new TiVo based receiver. The new features on their flyer are not enough to keep me with the HR10 TiVo for a long time however.
