I recently purchased my first TiVo from eBay and it's a Sony SVR-2000 with original 30G HD. I also purchased a brand new 160GB HD (expecting to only use 137G) to replace the old drive. I went through the procedure as defined by Hinsdale, connected the old drive as master on the primary IDE and the new drive as a slave on the same cable, booted with a CD made from MFSTOOLS20.zip, and issued this command;

# mfsbackup -aqo - /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -xpi - /dev/hda

response was;

mfs_load_volume_header: mfsvol_read_data: Input/output error
mfsbackup; Backup failed to startup. Make sure you
specified the right devices, and that the drives are not locked.
Restore failed: -: Success

I connected only the new HD and ran the Maxtor HD tests and it passed. I did not do anything to format it as instructed.

I did run gunlock to unlock the original drive and I believe it worked since when my pc first booted with the CD it saw the full size of the old drive.

Advice please!

Your Linux command told the computer to backup your new drive and restore it to your old drive assuming you hooked them up as listed. Switch your hdb and hda and try again.
