I want to upgrade the hard drive in a DirecTV Samsung SIR-S4080R.
Do these units have IDE or SATA hard drives, or does it matter?

Yes it does mater they take only IDE drives. Any size above 40GB. 7200 rpm Perfered but not required. Suggest you use Instantcake from www.dvrupgrade.com for providing the TiVo image for the drive. The learning curve is shorter and it is a great product. Make sure you get the software for the Samsung Tivo model you have. Good Luck.
