Is 3TB still the largest unmodified drive you can put in a Roamio?
Define unmodified. If you mean to simply swap drives without a computer, then yes, 3TB.
Up to 8TB, but you would need to hook up to a Windows computer and use MSFR to expand beyond the 3TB, found elsewhere on this forum. Work time: under 30 Min.
This would mean starting fresh again, just with a new and bigger drive.

If you use MFSTools 3.2/3.3, it would expand the bigger space, and copy shows, settings, etc. over. Work time: many hours/days and varies.

With my Roamio, I can just install a new 3 tb hard drive with no prepping and the Tivo will format it and make it usable?
Yes. and up to 8TB using MSFR after.

Recommended drive is WD Red. WD30EFRX is the 3TB.

Your shows and passes are not copied over with this method.

I'm looking at the WD Red drives and notice there are two different models of the 3TB version. The one recommended above by ThAbtO (Model WD30ERFX) has 64MB of cache. It also seems to be the older version. The second model is WD30EFAX with 256MB of cache. All other specifications between the two appear to be the same with the price of the 256MB cache version being a bit cheaper. Any thoughts or recommendations from the experts?

I have a standard Roamio and I'm thinking of upgrading the paltry 500GB drive. I'm aware I'll lose all recordings and passes (and I'm Ok with that). Is it really as easy as swapping drives? I don't have to set up the new drive first (installing software, firmware, formatting, etc)? If so, I'm wondering why it took me so long to do so!
