Had Anyone Had Luck Getting Tivo Wireless Adapter To Work With Philips DSR704?

I wanted to get my Philips DSR704 to talk to my computer via my wireless router so I can back up any exisiting programs before sending my 4 year old unit out for a replacement drive upgrade (I have no technical skills). I connected the Tivo adapter to the USB port of the DSR704 and the adapter's green power light is on. The adaptor does not show up from my computer nor can I see my computer from the receiver. Tivo phone and online technical support was a waste of time. Can anyone enlighten me as what i can do to get this to work, or is it a lost cause?

Have you installed PTVnet to enable the USB ports and also 2.0 ethernet drivers? You can read up at www.DVRupgrade.com. :)

You'll need to run the zipper on your box. Go check out the Underground section. And yes people are doing wireless and wired. but not all wireless adapters will work (there is info on what does and doesn't work over there).

I have 3 boxes all that have been Zippered. I went with a wired solution as I didn't want to deal with the hassle of wireless (and luckily could drop a cat-5 to them easily).

The USB ports are not enabled by default on the DSR704. You need to hack it to enable them and add networking functionality, hence the references to the "Zipper" program.

The OP said he has no technical skills. Think the zipper can be installed by someone at this skill level?

As others have hinted, none of the networking features are supported on the DTiVo, and you won't be able to do so (nor back up your programs) without some extensive "hacking" work. I don't recommend this for you based on what you wrote, as it is complicated, error-prone and you'll have to do it again on the new box. Also, the shows on the current box are encrypted and dealing with those is additional complication.

Also the Tivo wireless adapter does not work with DTivos.

Thank you all for your valuable input. It has prevented me from opening up a potentially frustrating can of worms for myself.

Maybe I should be asking if there is a cheap and quick back up solution via some type of inexpensive and self contained dvd writer. I would have to connect it to the receiver so I can transfer the recorded programs over. Does anyone have any experience with such a solution?

Any DVD recorder can be attached to a DTivo, however you can only transfer programs at 1x speed. Unless the programs are irreplaceable, I wouldn't bother with it.

The TiVo Wireless Adapter DOES work with DTiVos running 6.3 if you have "hacked" the box appropriately. Or at least so I have read in another forum where the hack creators hang out.

Not to cloud the issue, but I've read with 6.3, you lose some of the other nice hacks like multi room viewing or being able to copy a program to PC via USB.

Don't have 6.3 and the last I heard was it didn't. If I am wrong then I stand corrected.
