In the past, one of the features I most appreciated was the ability to move random video files from my main PC to the Tivo box so I could watch them on my 40 inch Samsung TV. All I had to do was move a file on the PC to the "My Tivo Files" directory. Then I could use the Tivo interface on the TV to upload them to TiVo. BUT TIVO TOOK THIS CAPABILITY AWAY, which their technical support people have confirmed) So I'm looking for a work-around.
Can anyone tell me:
a. Is there a known hack that will bring back this capability?, or
b. One possibility is buying an external hard drive that has both eSATA and Ethernet (or USB) interfaces connecting to Tivo via SATA and computer with the other. Does anyone know if the would work?, or
c. Does anyone know of some DVD service other than Tivo would give me back this capability?

Does your TV accept video files via USB drive? You are trying to play a video file located on your PC play on your TV. I can play USB files on my Blu-ray or TV. There are format restrictions of course. But if my old Sony Blu-ray can play a .WAV music file at 13.8Mbps, video should be easy.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do this mean you have an external hard drive plugged into the TiVo, or a USB cable from computer to Tivo? And which ever, what to you with the TVs settings to make the file play. More details would be helpful.

Did you get a new TiVo with TE4 or upgrade to TE4? TE3 (TiVo Experience 3) still has the ability to pull shows from a PC to a TiVo.

For TE4, you can stream the shows from your PC to your TiVo using Plex.

Unless you have the new hydra operating system like herronScott said, you can still transfer from My Tivo Recordings. you just need to update the certificate (transfer 2 files)

You posted that you want to play files that are on your PC with your TV. What does TiVo have to do with that? What am I missing? What model is your TV?

For some of us, TiVo is still the center of our television watching environment. For us that's Comcast for cable and network shows, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu along with some content uploaded from our PC's on our Roamio Pro (and Vudu to access any of our purchased movies/TV shows with digital rights).

1. Freeware pyTivo Desktop works great to transfer shows from your PC to your TiVo box (and the other direction as well), and is easy to install and use. However, it only works with the TiVo TE3 and earlier user interface; it does not work with the newest TiVo TE4/Hydra user interface. The thread here on it, for further information and with the download link: Easier to use pyTivo.

2. Many TVs and DVD players nowadays have the capability to connect to your PC via your home network and play shows stored on your PC. You may want to check that out with yours. Likewise, your TV or DVD player may have a USB port that allows you to attach a USB device such as a thumbdrive or a portable/external hard drive and play media stored on the drive--the TV/DVD player has media player software built into it.

3. You also can purchase a media player device that attaches to your TV and connects to your PC over your home network, to play shows/music/photos stored on your PC. For example, my Roku Ultra device has this capability and does this very well--I assume that other Roku devices have this capability, and likewise that Amazon Fire sticks and similar may as well. My Roku Ultra also has a USB port to which to connect a thumbdrive or portable/external hard drive, for playing the contents of that drive on my TV.

Lots of possibilities.

Most Samsung TV's have a media player built in. With mine, an older Samsung TV, I put the video files on a USB stick, plug the USB stick into the TV and the Samsung Media Player will play the files.

For TE4, you can stream the shows from your PC to your TiVo using Plex.

If you're willing to accept a doggy Tivo client and 720p limitations, sure. Much better to run TE3 w/pyTivo.

If you do not like the TiVo Plex implementation, Plex is also available on literally every smart TV platform available. Choose your poison.

Easiest way to do it is to use Plex. Set up all your video into folders. Stream directly to Plex app on a ROKU or as an app on a smart TV. Piece of cake.
