I just bought a new TivoHD and a new Pioneer HDTV. Is it possible to get the Tivo up and running before I set up the Pioneer? Or do I need the Pio to verify if I'm getting HD channels? I'd like to make sure the Tivo is running problem-free before I unpack the Pioneer. (I've got a M-card for the Tivo and a CC for the Pioneer.)

You can get it running and put the output to the S-video while tuning to HD channels.

PS: I feed the S-video in for the PIP on my TV (only supports PIP on SD inputs)

But my current TV is not a HD TV - it only has channels up to 99; my HD channels don't start until 104... so I still won't be able to check whether the M-card is working, right?

If you're running the tivo into your tv, it doesn't matter how many channels your tv gets. You won't be using the tv's tuner...you'll be using the tivo's.

However, at least on my Media Center (that doesn't support HD via cable/sat/fios), when I tune to an HD channel, I can at least hear the sound, which tells me that the signal is coming through.

Yes you will be able to. The TiVo HD will down convert the HD video to SD and output it via S-video. This is one of the items I personally verified on day one.
