Indeed. I only wish Sky would be honest about it, and bring the channel names in line with what they broadcast (they've done it with the Movie channels several times now). Something like Sky Football 1, Sky Football 2, Sky Cricket&Rugby, Sky SportsWeDon'tCareAbout.

A friend of mine once observed that most people only care about one or two sports.

The idea of a 'sports fan', one who is interested in, and follows, many sports is
a) a US import
b) a media myth or
c) a Sky TV invention.

The small guy on BBC TV who waffles about sport, seemed to think that most people would have a conflict last weekend because "England" were playing football, rugby and cricket on the same day.

I, myself, am only interested in one of these, and don't follow, or give a damn about, the other two.

I'm always deeply suspicious of anyone who claims to like more than a select few sports: I regard as being akin to John Thomson's character in The Fast Show, who flitted from team to team depending on who was successful.

One summer sport one winters sport seems about right. I'll watch anything sporting on TV, even the Olympics if I get sufficiently brainwashed, but I'll only spend money on watching rugby union.

Personally I like football, athletics, boxing and swimming. They are my favourites. I watch football the most, probably because it is shown more than any other sport. For other sports it tends to be only the major competitions. Tennis for example. I always watch Wimbledon and some of the other majors. For snooker I always watch the world championship but will hardly watch it at all for the rest of the year. I have found myself watching F1 this year now that we have Lewis Hamilton. I stopped watching when Damon Hill retired. I guess I need to see a decent Brit otherwise I lose interest.

I have also been watching some of the cricket and rugby lately. I would not watch them normally. I must have a thing about major tournaments. :)
