Fringe 9/30/11 "One Night in October"

Wow...was this bad....I have NEVER quit on a Fringe episode before...but I did on this....just terrible. Found myself bored with the storyline, the acting, no Peter....bleh...

I didn't think this episode was any worse (or better) than your average Fringe episode.

There's a few references I'm confused about. Maybe they have to do with the new timelines created in both universes without Peter:

1) Fauxlivia mentions the alternate Colonel Broyles several times, but we don't see him. This version of Broyles died when he helped during Olivia's escape attempt, so that must have not happened anymore. Otherwise Fauxlivia might be purposefully not telling them what happened to Broyles.

2) Our Olivia says she killed her step father. According to this Fringe wiki article, she only wounded him, so again the events must have changed. Maybe she doesn't meet Peter as a kid, which changes what she does to her step father?

Yes we did!

He was right there in the Fringe Division HQ barking orders when everyone was looking for "our" version of the killer.

But it is interesting that Red Broyles wasn't killed.
Also that Fauxlivia is still with Frank and has not had a love child.
And her Stepfather most likely didn't abuse her.

I also don't understand the hate for this episode.
I liked it and thought it was interesting.
How does an average person react when confronted with a parallel universe?

(Although I did notice that they couldn't keep Fauxlivia's as Olivia's hair consistent. Chalk it up to production deadline issues.)

We liked it. I really enjoy how Anna Torv portrays the two Olivias. That "Kennedy" fella is good, too. They all are. So the other Broyles is back -- I wonder how many other things are going to be undone?

I loved Walter's "Maxell" pose when he was listening to Mozart's Requiem. I'm not clear about his comment to Astrid, though. He mentioned something about the reason why Mozart composed it. It was commissioned by some count to commemorate the recent passing of his wife. In Amadeus it was Salieri. But I don't see how either of those could be related to Walter and his current state.

EDIT: Actually Walter's line was "Do you know what Mozart sacrificed to write that movement?" The Requiem has 14 movements and he was listening to the first two: Introitus/Kyrie. I don't know of what, specifically, Mozart sacrificed for those movements. I'm guessing the answer lies somewhere in Amadeus "mythology" rather than actual history, but I'm not familiar with either other than what I just read in Wikipedia. Mozart thought for sure he was dying (he thought someone poisoned him), and he predicted (correctly) that he was writing his own requiem (the incomplete work was played at his funeral). Maybe Walter's question to Astrid was just meant to parallel his own feelings (he thinks he is dying or going insane)? Maybe -- just maybe -- I'm thinking of this too deeply. Nah.

I'm actually a bit surprised how someone could have missed him. The alternate Broyles is such a striking contrast to "our" Broyles -- paramilitary uniform, ripped like he is on steroids. Couldn't miss him.

I actually spotted the Observer this episode. Usually I miss them.

I don't always look at the screen when 'watching' TV. Too many gadgets and easily distracted.

I liked it. I just want Peter back, and for Olivia to smile or something. She's kind of a downer now.

This was a kick-ass episode. I loved the interplay between the two fringe divisions. I thought Anna Torv knocked it out of the park, again. They really didn't need the bad wig on Fauxlivia for us to tell them apart, Anna has make them so distinct.

I also liked the story-line. There is a real neurologist by the name of James Fallon who studies the brains of sociopaths and psychopaths. Using a PET scan, he discovered a dead spot in the brains of his subjects. And once he discovered that there were a number of notorious murderers on his father's side of the family (including Lizzie Borden) he checked hi own PET scan and found the same dead spot in his own scan. So that part of the premise is not all that outré.

I also like the way that the show is hi-lighting the effect of Peter being out of the lives of the Fringe team. And I like the way that they are prepping for his return.

That brain freezing fluid setup was absurd. You could see the colored fluid moving through the SINGLE tube to the head, and the flow rate was obviously quite significant. And yet there was no return tube for the fluid, and there was no fluid leaking out of the head. Even if the fluid were all evaporating very quickly, the volume of gas coming from that much evaporation would be huge, not just a slight condensation from the nose and mouth.

I am a Fringe fan, but Olivia and our universe have become major downers. The spark and chemistry of early seasons are gone. I'm rooting for the alternate universe.

I agree, she's really made them their own characters, fauxlivia just has this awesome casual smile and fluidity in all her movement that our Olivia never has, more so with no Peter around.

I thought the exchange between the two of them in the SUV as they pulled up to the farm was terrific. Fauxlivia obviously thinks she has had Olivia all figured out. Then Olivia out-thinks her on the tractor license plate in the photo, and earns an almost respectful "you ride with me" from Fauxlivia. And as Olvia gets out of the car, nonchalantly saying of her father, "I killed him", Fauxlivia gives her the briefest look -- "whoa!". Really well-played by Torv on both sides.

That made me wonder too. I seem to remember that the other Broyles died horribly. But we did see both of them in this episode.

Agreed....this ep was a real stinker. Hope it gets better....and soon.
