I have a Direct TV Tivo that is about 5 years old. A year ago I started getting intermittent scrambled screens. By powering the unit off/on I could solve this for a few days. Now, my Tivo receiver is frequently showing "please wait, powering up" message and it hangs there. I have to turn off/on the unit to get past the power up message. Is my Tivo dying? Can I replace a Direct TV Tivo receiver now?

Probably a failing hard drive. You can either call DirecTV and they'll send you a DirecTV DVR (not a Tivo) and you'll automatically be signed up for another 2 years of service. Or you can replace the hard drive yourself - it's a standard 3.5 inch IDE/parallal ATA hard drive. You'll need to copy the Tivo hard drive image to the new drive using a PC, or buy a preimaged Tivo hard drive for more money. See this this thread for more info DirecTivo troubleshooting
