Maybe I'm overthinking this a bit... I've got a Tivo subscription with a 40-hour unit right now. Pay as you go for the past two years now. I'd like to take advantage of the free DT offer from Tivo's site to replace the aging smaller unit. I'd go with the 3-year monthly plan for payment.

I'm offered the MSD price once I log in, and would check out then and there, but can I purchase the new Tivo then cancel the old one once the 80-hour comes in or would that void my Tivo agreement? The only hitch is that MSD price. If it reverts back to $12.95 a month on its own or I have to pay the difference I'm happy but if all of a sudden I have to pay for the unit or the early termination fee of some kind I don't want to do that. Thanks.

If your current Tivo is commitment free, you can cancel the sub at anytime. If you get a new tivo on a monthly sub with the MSD rate and then cancel your first sub, the new Tivo will lose the MSD and will be billed $6 more every month, but it doesn't affect the length of your commitment.

i'm bi-coastal between CA and NC. have one tivo in CA and two (in my mom's name) in NC. i'd like to get this now (in CA) and then ship to NC and leave it there. can i transfer the committment into my mom's name, or should i transfer the two tivos (all my tivos are lifetime) in NC into my name and then just change the location on the new DT?

I would keep them all on one acct so the new one qualifies for MSD pricing. But you said all 3 you have now are lifetime subs, so I guess it doesnt matter. Whatever makes more sense to you I suppose, with all of your other units being lifetime I think the only thing to worry about is the location of the boxes and the area they are calling in from.

Its amazing how many offers there are out right now to get rid of all the last DT models, you cant even sift through tivo's site to find them, Anyways heres your link

Are they eliminating the 80hr DT model? Or upgrarding it? I know the world is going HD, but is Tivo going to eliminate standard def. models in the near future?

I think they are eliminating the Series 2 DT (as we now know it), for a Series 2 Digital (will have digital cablecard/OTA tuner, plus A/V inputs and IR control, likely capable of playing HD MRV (downconverted though), and MPEG4 video from wherever.

I'd bet 25 space credits if I had some.

yep, not sure about the cable card part. Why have that cost if you are making the box to hook up to a set top box (though the target would be sat) but yah a Series 2 that can do digital OTA and out HD if the show was formatted in HD would sell better adn they can malke them right on the same assembly line with the same basic parts. A real cost saving move by Tivo.

This is perfect for me - I just had a series 2 DT get a surge on my cat 5 wire and it blew out the ethernet and USB ports :( I was scouting around to see if any one had ever fixed those parts but now I just replaced the whole box for free

Time to pay attention to hard drive deals

Get a second converter so you can have an actual two tuners?

i'm sorry, but i'm not quite sure what you mean? the DT already have two tuners, right?
He means that if you need to record two digital channels at the same time, you'll need two DT units (+ 2 cable boxes), since the DT can only record one digital station at a time. (the S3 and HD can record 2, either OTA or cable digital/HD-with-cablecards).

All can record 2 analog channels at once.
