Is there any way to force TiVo HD to record from the HD copy of a cable channel? For example, channel 4 is my local NBC station in analog; channel 716 is the HD feed of the same thing. The TiVo seems to keep recording shows off the non-HD channels, despite the fact that I have removed the channels under the Channel List.

It was my understanding that the TiVo Series 3 was smart enough to figure out the difference between the SD and HD channels and prefer the HD ones, but this doesn't appear to be true.

Is there something I need to set to force this? I am using 2 CableCARDs and the HD channels come in just fine and have guide data, but it never chooses to record from them.

Are you new to Tivo? Make sure you create your season pass with channel 716, not channel 4. The season pass will record from whatever channel it was created with. If you create a season pass for a program on channel 4, you will never get the HD version. Open Find Programs -> Season Passes and take a look.

Or are you talking about wishlists and suggestions. For those....Are you certain you removed (unchecked) channel 4 from Settings -> Channels -> Channel List?

The HD filter came with 8.3 on the S3, so I suppose that'll be in an update at some point.

Yeah, this is not in the guide data right now that I know of...while I could be wrong, I don't believe Tribune data services (the folks that TiVo buys guide data from) manages this type of info ...meaning...there is nothing in the guide data that I know that tells the TiVo exactly that channel 4 and 716 (in your case) are actually the same channel, and one is SD and the other HD. Just because both stations share some of the same characters in their call letters is not enough...inherently in the data there must be some type of shared "key" / unique id provided to tell TiVo this...and from I know Tribune does not provide this...

TiVo can look at guide data within wishlists and prefer HD shows over SD shows from the same series, but not channel differentiation...at least not yet....This would be a good service for Tribune to add and provide within their guide listings....

As noted in the other post, setup your season passes from off the guide, and select your programs from HD channels. Also be sure to remember (unless you've already upgraded your harddrive), that you've only got 20 hours of space on your stock TiVoHD for HD recordings....so I'm actually very careful at the time being of what I decide to bother recording in HD versus another.

I'm seriously considering swapping out the hardrive for a 750GB unit...just so I can record as much as I want in HD and also SD High/Best quality.

What the devil are you talking about here? Since you're new here, you should take note of the fact that those kind of personal attacks and name calling aren't welcome.

The TivoHD has the HD wishlist category too.

I know for a fact that wishlists do not record from removed (unchecked) channels.

The individual in question is saying that "Suggestions" record from the SD channels even though he has unchecked them. Did that occur on the Series3 too?

I did the same thing, TiVo still records suggested shows on them
So you are talking about Suggestions.

The Tivo does differentiate between SD and HD shows for wishlists. And of course, you can create season passes for all your favorite shows on the HD channels. But there is no way to prioritize "suggestions" in HD at this time.

If you want, you can disable Suggestions under Settings -> Recording -> Tivo Suggestions.

If you have not done so already, you may want to create some auto-record wishlists and specify HD. Go to Find Programs -> Wishlist Search. This is one of Tivo's most powerful features.

This needs to happen ASAP.

I want to setup an ARWL to catch all the Chiefs games. In the past, I just created one for "CHIEFS AT & Sports/Football" which works great.

Except now, TiVo always picks the lower SD channel first, so, I have to go in and manually fix it for every recording. That's annoying.

I agree that Tivo could make this more intuitive by including a preference to "record HD version if available" under Settings -> Recording -> HDTV Priority. Until Tivo adds that option, you have two options to accomplish the same thing for wishlists.

You can remove the SD version of channel from your channel lineup. If you do that, your "CHIEFS AT & Sports/Football" wishlist will always record the HD version if available. That's what I do.

The alternative is to create two wishlists, the first being "CHIEFS AT & HD/Sports/Football." The HD category is the first thing you see when creating a new wishlist. That will record only those Chiefs games broadcast in HD.

If you want to record SD games when no HD version exists, then create a second wishlist for "CHIEFS AT & Sports/Football" (without the HD) and put it at a lower priority in your season pass list. If a HD version exists, the Tivo will record that and ignore the duplicate on the SD channel.

After more testing, it appears I was incorrect above.

The TivoHD will create and schedule wishlist recordings for channels removed from the channels list. This appears to be a bug.

To test, I removed all SD and OTA versions of channels from the guide. After that, I created an autorecord keyword wishlist for Washington Nationals games (Washington MLB /Sports/Baseball). When I click "View upcoming programs" with that keyword search, I see all the correctly scheduled recordings for games on MASN from 8/12 - 8/13 and 8/20 - 8/24, but it does not show recordings scheduled for the 8/17 and 8/18 Nationals games on WDCA20 (FiOS ch. 805). It lists the games but there's no recording logo next to them. My initial impression was, "why isn't it recording those games?"

However, when I check the To Do list, the TivoHD does have recordings for those two games scheduled on 8/17 and 8/18. However, they aren't scheduled to record from the WDCA on FiOS (ch. 805), they are scheduled to record from the off-air WDCA 20-1. But that OTA channel (WDCA 20-1) is not checked in my channel list. I don't get a reliable signal on that OTA channel.

Summary

Removing channels from the "channels I receive" list eliminates them from viewable wishlist search results, but wishlists still schedule recordings from those channels, even though you can't see it anywhere except the To Do list.

Did you report this to Tivo as a problem?

I think I've seen this, but didn't realize what was happening.
