Flash Gordon 9/14/2007 (S01E05) "Ascension"

I couldn't stop watching it, as much as my brain said it was something I should do. Shirtless hawk men gathering in circles and crowing at each other, abducting young boys, and dressing Flash up as one of them. I just couldn't stop.

This series would be priceless if they'd change about 6 or 8 things and aim more for a Flesh Gordon sensibility than a Flash Gordon one.

LOL! I started watching it on Sci-Fi.com just for the heck of it (the shirtless men comment caught my eye). Yikes! They were also wingless and ran around the Canadian Forest crowing at each other.

Did they actually fly? I couldn't get through the first 15 minutes so other than them jumping off the side of that building with the kid, I didn't really see any flying going on. Do they sprout wings or something later into the show? Hawkmen with just weird tattoos....not liking it. :(

The one thing I can say for this show...it does have a certain wit. While it's no where near as effective (or brilliant) as the Stargate series, it does say something about the writers (yes, I'm opening that up for witty/scathing responses!).

Apparently their ability to fly comes about because they're "really strong" and wear flaps of loose brown material on their backs. Near the end we actually see two of them fly (or is it glide?) instead of just jump off.
Yet another Flash Gordon tenant bites the dust. Hawkmen without wings are just guys with capes. And the kid they got for the son was absolutely horrible. I still get a chuckle out of some of the Balin lines/actions, but that's about it.

Did anyone else notice that Dale wasn't driving her car for some of the scenes? She was on the phone with Flash and the side window was visible over her right shoulder. But when she arrived in the forest she was alone in the car. I guess she has an invisible chauffeur.
With this episode, I am much closer to deleting my season pass.

It's sad to see a property with such a rich history as Flash Gordon, to be re-imagined with so little imagination. Hawkmen without wings? I know they're doing things on the cheap, but that is lame.
Really, no Flash Gordon was NEVER EVER good. Mostly campy throughout all of it's history.

As horrible as this is, for some damn reason I'm enjoying it.

But man were the hawkmen bad. Just horrible. Laughably so. LIke really bad Klingons or something.
I can't believe adults write and produce this.

I gave up my SP after the 3rd ep. I just could not take it anymore. The 1st Season of Buck Rogers (with Gil Gerard) wasn't this bad, and that was pretty bad IMO.

Something got recorded from SciFi today or yesterday, leaving my receiver tuned to it, and I just had the thing on for background noise and this episode was being rerun. I heard someone explain the hawk men can;t really fly, they just glide using their capes. So I guess that makes it all right.

:)

Bidibidibidi.
I also am kind of enjoying it. I guess I just like the attempts at being campy!

Rob :)
Barely watchable campiness, but I am keeping my SP :)
But it's not even campy. They miss that mark by a wide margin.
This show is a waste of electrons but I still watch.
We laugh at the show every week, so we will keep it unless I need another tuner for recording another show.
I finally decided to watch this episode. It was finally so bad it's good. The scenes with the hawkmen were priceless. :D

I would have loved to be in the writer's meeting when they came up with the idea of caped hawkmen that just glide, instead of winged ones who fly, in order to keep the budget in check. :D

Funny how the boy who was left behind identified the guys as birdmen. What the hell was birdlike about them?
