Are closed captions enabled (maybe accidentally) on your TV? Note that the TiVo doesn't see the volume button.
Firmware Bug?
Recently my daughter's TIVO has been recording Oprah 4:00 PST with a black rectangle encompassing most of the screen. It disappears when you hit the volume, just to reappear. This occurs live as well as recorded. Anyone know of a software bug or other issue?

CC that automatically kicks in when the vloume is muted or at a trigger level.

Sounds like close captions set to the txt mode.
