FIOS Premiere Install

So, in finding that Amazon Lightening deal, I caved. Now instead of selling all my Tivos, I instead bought a new one.

I was wondering if there is any way to get Verizon to drop off a cable card and let you install it yourself? I know they won't let you pick it up.

What I was thinking was to take out my old cable card (from an HD unit), have the FIOS installer install the new card in my Tivo HD, then call back to Verizon support to tell them I need to re-activate the card in my Premiere, once I get it.

Any chance this wil work?

FiOS does not pair the cards and the truck roll is free if they are only bringing a CableCard.
You should be able to take the card from teh TiVoHD and put it in the Premiere. I've moved my cables cards between TiVos dozens of times since I've had FiOS. The channels always came right up with no intervention from FiOS.

Of course for a new card a tech will need to come out unless they have changed things. The last time I needed a cable card the CSR told me they would ship me one. a few days later I received another Actiontec router. Which made my thrid one. They sen me a second one previously by mistake too. And after that one I learned not to try and waste my time returning it.
For me the Truck rolls are free but the tech is required to do the install.

Not a big deal the last couple of guys they sent out really knew what they were doing.
Just make sure to run GS and tell it you will install the CC later. This will ensure your box has the latest software as well as give it time to index all the data.

Once the card is paired everything should work just like your HD.

Like above, my last install was painless and the Verizon Tech's know what they are doing with CC installs now.
Just to reiterate Aaron's advice - pull the card from the other TiVo and pop it in from the beginning and run GS. No pairing is required for an already-activated card.
I pulled the card out of the FIOS STB and plugged it into my Premiere XL and it worked like a champ. So if nothing else, have them install a STB or a free DVR. As soon as they leave, pull the card, then stick the box in a closet or basement storage. Don't forget to have WiFi or wired connection ready too. Maybe really soon now Tivo will get the HD VI working (Don't hold your breath), but for now it is FUBAR. So forget the HD video interface screens, stick with SD. My HD VI worked for about a month and then the spinning green wheel of death started to appear and I'm on a wired connection to our FIOS 30MB service.
If this is not the place to ask this question, I apologise in advance, and will gladly post in another more apporpriate thread.

I currently have Fios with a DVR. I just purchased a TIVO Premiere and is looking forward to maximize the Tivo. I already know that I need a M-Card from Fios. However, recently I saw a TIVO Premiere on sale on Ebay that said it comes with a Motorola MediaCypher cable card, that you won't need to pay the monthly M-Card fee from Fios.

Does anyone know if you can own a MediaCyper card outright and that will work inplace of the M-Card from FIOS. I do see MediaCypher cards on sale on Ebay. Obviously, why pay fixed monthly fees to Fios when you can own the equipment/card outright. Would apprecaiate if anyone has any insights.
You need to rent the cable card from FiOS.

Its not free here. They wanted 70 bucks to roll a truck for a card for me. I had to threaten to quit and then upgrade my package to get no fee.

It's very well known issue that Fios requires the truck roll and the reps can mistakenly suggest you are going to be charged, but Verizon does NOT bill for a truck roll that is only a cableCARD install.

I was told the same thing and like stated above, both cards installed were free even though I was told I was going to pay.

Don't trust the CSR, just make sure they ONLY do the CC and nothing else and there will not be a charge.
Yes I didn't get billed either.

Not too much longer until cable cards can just be picked up right? I think companies had 9-12 months to comply. Maybe by end of summer?

The FCC order was in mid-October 2010, and it applies to companies that already allowed SOME self-installs (say for a cable modem) in 9 months; the 12 month deadline applies if they didn't previously allow any self-installs at all.

FWIW that's MORE time than the cablecos asked for, but I doubt they'll implement any faster than they're required to, obviously.

So some cable companies will in theory be required to allow cablecard self installs in mid-July of 2011, and all should be required to allow them by mid-October 2011.

I'm really curious to see how that rollout goes - I bet many of them will say they don't have to allow them till October, even if they clearly allow other self-installs and so that's clearly false. Even after October, I imagine lots of confusion will reign, particularly at the local office level. We'll see, I guess!
I've had to call Verizon Fios 4 separate times, got bounced around from billing to technical, then back several times waiting 20+ mintues each time, just to get one M-Card. Their right hand doesn't know the left and the Company doesn't appear to care a whole lot about training and what the FCC says they ought to do.

My Premiere has been sitting idle for 3+ weeks now waiting for the cable card.

....and they want to charge me $79 for the truck roll. I know from reading this site that the charges may not show up on my bill, but if it does it's going to blow my gasket.

Have the huge number of folks that have had the experience and reassured others that if ALL you have is a CableCARD install with the truck roll not convinced you yet?

Seriously, over and over you have people that have been there telling you they do not charge for the truck roll no matter what the CSR says.
