I did a search on it, and pretty much everything I came away with was oriented toward the Series 2, 3, and HD boxes, so...

Verizon just brought their FiOS service to my neck of the woods, and I'm getting really tired of Time Warner (too bad my current apartment makes it so damn hard to get DirecTV), so I'd like to know: is the Series 1 TiVo compatible with Verizon's FiOS service? I realize I will need a set-top box, but I'm unsure if the TiVo will be able to get channel lineups, control the STB through an IR emitter, etc...

Yes. As far as things are concerned, FIOS is cable TV, and the Series 1 is as compatible as a Series 2 (except maybe it may not serial control the FIOS box).
