File Size

I record everything in basic since I still have all CRT's and no HD. On my S2DT a 30 minute episode would record at about 300 megs. I just noticed the TivoHD is using 900 megs for a 30 minute show. This defeats the whole reason I got the 2TB drive since it will actually hold less recordings and not more.

Anyone know why the file size is so large?

That 900+ megs is usually from a digital recording not analog. Digital is recorded AS IS and no transcoding to best/basic quality. Only analog is quality adjusted to your settings.
900 megs for a 30 minute show. Sounds like you're recording off the HD channel rather than the SD channel. e.g. for me 2 is SD Fox, 702 is HD Fox.

Even though I have a HDTV, I record virtually all shows off of the SD channels, for these similar disk space reasons.. (though I admit I'm finally starting to think about recording a couple of shows on the HD channels, though that's for aspect ratio as well as picture quality reasons -- shows letterboxed AND windowboxed inside of a 4:3 are annoying.. and 'zoom' from the TV or TiVo don't do the right thing.)

It was Dick VanDyke and Hogan's Heroes so there would be nothing to gain by digitizing them and I don't subscribe to HD channels since... well... I gots no HD set to view them on.

I am also pulling all my MASH episodes directly from my old tivo to the new one and they are coming in at 700 megs on the HD when they are 300 megs on the old Tivo. This isn't working out so well at all...

Wait... Now I get you... Digital as in digital cable... Which is why I moved to the HD since my provider went all digital. Darn it... Now I need a 4TB drive in this thing just to hold what I had on the S2DT...
Never mind I read it again - Please ignore this! LOL
