You can certainly do wired ethernet adapter -> ethernet cable -> computer, but you'll need crossover cable, not patch cable. This is how my TiVo connects, not just for transfers but also to download program info - I have two network cards in the PC, one hooked up to the TiVo and one hooked up to the LAN that provides my internet connection.tivogangster said:

I just got my Series 2 TIVO up and running on my wireless network. I am currently downloading a 30 minute show unto my laptop and the estimated download time is 45 minutes. This is in a 802.11g wireless network. Although I have the working wireless USB adapter, can I purchase the wired USB ethernet adapter and connect my laptop directly to the TIVO with a short CAT5 patch cable for a faster transfer? Or does the program have to be transferred across the wireless network?

Don't expect a big difference in your transfer speeds through. It may be a tiny bit faster with wired vs wireless, but, you have to remember that the USB port on the tivo is USB 1.1 with a throughput limitation of 12mbps. Even if your 54g card says you have a connection at 54mbps, you aren't going to see over 12 because that is the maximum amount of data that can be pushed through the USB port.
It depends on which DVR you have.
1xx DVRs have USB1.1 hardware ports, 2xx and 5xx have USB2.0, and 7.x software has 2.0 port drivers. It just seems USB1.1 with the overhead "commercial" wireless adapters needs.

I don't mean to thread jack but where can you get a USB-Ethernet adapter that is USB2.0? The list TiVO has is SOOoooooooo old. And the Linksys Revision 1 is impossible to find. I tried ordering from TiVo but Fedex crushed the box and it was a PITA to get a refund from TiVo. ANy other places to get a good adapter?

I agree with Shawn95GT, we have been using the FA120, and it sped up our transfer rate by almost 2 times, a half hour show on high quality takes just under 20 minutes to transfer now.

I got my netgear adapter today. I used to use a Dlink adapter (802.11G) and shows took forever to DL. After a software update tranfer times were significantly reduced.
DLink Wireless: 30 min show - 1.03gb - 1.5-2 hours (200-250 KB/sec)
Netgear FA120: 30 min show - 1.03bg -<45 min to transfer show (320-380 KB/sec)
Its better but not AMAZINGLY better. Are my results typical or unique? Also the tranfer times we confirmed on both my laptop (wireless) and my desktop (wired). I initiated the tranfers via https://tivo:[email protected]/nowplaying/index.html I used safari on the laptop and firefox on the desktop. I got similar tranfer speeds.

That sounds about right. It's even faster (faster than real time!) Tivo --> Tivo.
I am considering it, but the 2nd TiVo is in a PITA location to run cat 5 too.
