in the 15 threads with the word external in them, i cannot find the answer.
HR20 uses only one drive at a time, the internal OR the external. is the premiere like this or are both drives considered 'one' drive by the tivo?

Yeah, that is correct! It's just adding another point of possible failure (the only real upside is that you don't have to open up your TiVo and replace the internal drive thus, voiding your warranty). I think I might end up just selling mine. Also, if you remove the external drive permanently after you already installed it, you will end up losing all of your recordings.so if one dies you are out of luck?
