Hey guys first off I hate people who come here just to ***** about how Tivo sucks I love Tivo. But someone needs to up QC on these elites, I got the elite for Christmas one week later it reboots and just goes to black. I unplugged left it alone tried again, it begins to boot then goes to black. I exchanged it at Best Buy no big deal, except I finally had all my season passes and rating where I wanted them. But no biggie, I guess my only point here is that some one should figure what the problem is and fix it. I mean this is obviously a hard ware problem, find it and correct it

That sucks that it died, but it was probably a hard drive issue. I've read about that stuff happening, but it's rare. Unfortunately you were one of the small percentages of people had a new hard drive have issues.

Every device that uses a hard drive would have the same chance of dying from a hard drive failure.
I agree that it could happen on just about any tech device, but too many people are having problems with the elite. Someone at Tivo should at least release a statement saying hey we know a problem exists we are working on it. Sony, Microsoft, Samsung and many other electronic companies got out of hot water with a statement just like that.
... but too many people are having problems with the elite.
Are you basing this on fact, or just from what you've been reading in this forum?
If it's the latter, you're thinking might be way off.
For every person that complains about the Elite, there are possibly many more that are perfectly happy.
I am basing it off 2 best buy employees today telling me they had so many problems with the elite they wont be carrying them any longer. The guy on the phone said they have a 60 percent return rate. I know these guys for the most part don't know jack but the guy on the phone seemed to know his stuff, I had to call corporate to see who had elites in stock. Because the best buy website took the elites down, luckily 1 best buy had some, the salesmen there was less knowledgeable but saw a lot come back not as returns but defective merchandise.
I just want to make it clear that I love the elite, nothing can beat it has far as I am concerned. It's just that there are a large number of units with hard ware bugs, well I assume hard ware bugs. But that is exactly my point Tivo should at least say hey something is going on we're working on it but they don't.

I can still access the Elites at Best Buy. I can still purchase them online for shipping or in store pickup. No idea why they have been off the main site. They are still available at 14 of the 20 stores near me.

I don't understand why you are saying there are lots of returns based upon feedback of a csr while recognizing that csrs are often limited in their scope of understanding or experience (I believe you said they "don't know jack"). If they had that high of a return rate, this board would be on fire. Not that there don't seems to be some growing pains, but evidence from a guy who "seemed to know his stuff" is simply an opinion (as is a saleguy who says the returns are "defective"- that is always the best way to get your money back with electronics without paying a restocking fee).
I have to agree with op about the elites. It took me 5 times and 400 miles to get a working elite.
Guys I don't know why its so hard to accept that a number of elites is defective, I mean I get liking TiVo I love TiVo. But you guys act like there is nothing wrong here at all, come on guys I love TiVo but where there's smoke there's fire. And just for reality, you guys act like these elites where sold in the millions and that this forum is the go to place. Well sorry but it's not, yes I agree it once was but not now. Times have changed Apple made them change people don't want to spend 500 or even a hundred dollars on something. To then come home and spend 2 days on a forum to get it to work, today if it don't work it goes back and the costumer moves on.

You both asked why I trust the BB employees simple they had no reason to lie neither one was trying to sell me anything. I am glad you can access the TiVo elite but me and anyone else who went to bestbuy.com could not

I must ask though how has both your experiences with the elite been?
My experience with the Elite has actually been mostly positive. It's way faster than the ridiculously and pathetically slow HDs I have (using the remove and scrolling is an art form with them, learning to predict the crazy delays). I has not rebooted, shut down, etc. It's recorded everything it's supposed to. The only problem is a REAL problem with Amazon HD downloads for me. Everything else seems to be working well, and I have about 2 months on it. I will also say that Tivo dropped the ball in general with guide data about 6-8 weeks ago, which affected all my units. Clearly a Tivo issue - my free Verizon DVR had no issues, and MyTivo guide data was not the same as zap2it, etc. OTOH, Tivo support is pretty much the same. Call to report an issue that's been floating around here for a couple months, and of course they say "never heard of that before" even though there are absolutely tickets out there. Get the standard 7-14 days for level 2 to fix the issue when we all know that's about as likely as balancing the federal budget next month.

I also love my elite when it worked that's why I got another one and not a refund. I am just saying Tivo needs to stop hiding, they need a new PR company or something the Sony Playstation 3 had a 1 in 1000 failure rate at launch. Sony said hey there is a problem where working on it, Microsoft had a 1 in 500 failure rate for the 360 they came out said hey are bad we should of said something sooner 3 year warranty for everyone.

My point here is that all tech has problems at least own up to it Tivo.
I'm not defending it, but I had a S1 that was almost DOA -- died within a day IIRC. I don't remember where I bought it way back when -- IIRC, it was one of those sites that buy "new but unwanted" stuff.. I had to get Bullwinkle involved for Tivo to even replace the under-warranty Tivo at the time (since it wasn't bought directly from them or a normal store).
I must ask though how has both your experiences with the elite been?
Absolutely love it. The only problem I had was with the Season Passes I transferred online from my S3 to the Elite. About half didn't work properly. So I recreated them; not a big deal.

I love the four tuners. I love the hard disk size. I love the faster interface.

I'm in love.:D
I do not have an elite, but have been following the threads on it. It is simply bad form to take two data points from lower level employees and say it is a trend. It could be a trend, but you don't have enough data to validate.

If it like going to a field utility worker and asking if there are problems. All he sees are problems and may indicate that the systems are all crap and are always falling apart. Well, from his perspective it is, while not having any true comparative data.

That is all I'm saying.

My friend I am afraid you are not understanding me or simply missing my point, the elite has a problem with manufacturing or at least it did. You keep attacking the employees as if they have done something personnel, I said my own self 9 times out of 10 the BB people don't have a clue.

But when you add 2 plus 2 you get 4 that's all I am saying, you see this is not a debate about whether something is wrong with a number of elites. That much is fact for you or anyone else to say other wise is absurd. Now so far no one has said that, but what I am saying is Tivo should address the issue and not keep hiding.

Your point seems to be its such a small number of defective units who cares, well I care I had a PS3 on day 1 and a X-BOX 360 too and neither of my systems had problems at first. But hearing all the reports made me feel like I was supporting companies who just did not care about their reputation, which made me think their products might be a bad investment on my end. When both companies came forward to say they're aware of the problem and working on it, it made me feel a lot better.

Do you also defend Tivo when someone says the HD UI should be complete by now are they even working on it why wont they tell us?

Do you also defend Tivo when they announce new features and then never actually implement them? Never giving a reason why I might add

All I am saying is Tivo has a great product and I love my elite and Premiere before it. But Tivo needs a good PR man, mine and 90 percent of all the complaints could be taken care of with simple statements.

How about a good PR woman?
Any thing or one would be better than the PR monkey they have now
I don't understand how someone with the writing skills of a 10 year old has enough money to buy an Elite in the first place.
