The Edge 6 tuner cable only is about twice the price of a Refurb Roamio Pro (Weaknees)_with all in service. I have a Premiere XL4 and wonder if I just want the Roamio set to TE4 and the Premiere on TE3, of course, Just what, if anything am I giving up and what happened to the discussions regarding ads showing up when you stream or watch shows. It is so hard to decide! Or TV's can do 4k but I would have nothing to record at 4K. I also use wired Ethernet.

The Roamio Pro is your most cost-effective option. I would recommend that you skip the Edge.

"Only about twice the price." ........... Must be nice.
That "only" in the OP is a post-modifier to "cable," as in a TiVo Edge that is only capable of cable reception.

Great, and do you know if it comes set for TE3? I am starting to think it is the best option. I just wonder if Factory Refurbished can mean that the other things like a fan or PS have limited life or are these usually just Early Life Failures with little use on them that were sent back to TIVO. I guess I can ask Weaknees.

sound&vision magazine has a review of the tivo edge for cable on their website.I personally would buy the edge, as the tivo edge upscales to 4k plus it has dolby vision and dolby atmos! Yes i know you cant record anything in 4k but your tv programs will look much better, and netflix and you tube will look awesome while viewing 4k content. (assuming you have a 4k tv).

Well, I understand but I do have 5.1 but do not have ATMOS and never will. No longer have Netflix. So, for twice the price I do not see how the Edge would be something I should think hard about.

If you want TE3 on a Roamio that comes with TE4, you can revert to TE3 right after starting it up.
Edge has no option for TE3.

I understand your situation. In my case i have been planning for dolby atmos and dobly vision since i 1st heard about them! I first got me an av receiver that i knew was capable of dolby atmos and dolby vision then i made sure i got me a 4k blu ray player that also could do the atmos &vision and finally i bought me an LG tv that had dolby vision and atmos, all i need now is the tivo edge, which i hope to buy soon.

It probably comes with TE3, but if necessary then "sidegrading" from TE4 to TE3 is a simple process best done before you have any content on the disk. I haven't seen complaints about refurbished TiVo hardware, but anyway it will come with a good warranty and Weaknees is a great company.

In my opinion the Roamio Pro is the last great DVR that TiVo may ever produce. Since you don't specifically need the added A/V features or faster streaming capabilities of the Edge, there's really is no reason to spend that much more money just to work through all the bugs in such a new product, not to mention the bugs and unfinished features that may never change in TE4 which is what you'd be stuck with on an Edge.

I just replaced the hard disk in our five year-old Roamio Pro to give it a new lease on life rather than upgrade, and I have already decided that if and when the whole unit goes then we're moving on to Channels DVR.

Well, I also wonder how you replaced the Hard Drive in the Roamio Pro as a 3GB drive will not work with DVRBars. I ask as I sure would like to make a backup if I do go for the Roamio Pro before anything goes wrong!

You don't need to do anything to prepare a hard drive for the Roamio Pro, just put a fresh new drive in and it will format and prepare the drive and off you go in about 5 minutes. I just put a 1TB drive in my Roamio basic to give it twice the storage, just take the old drive out put the new one in and that was it. If you are looking to save recordings etc. will leave that to the experts, but drive replacement in Roamio is very simple.

OH! I guess that may be because the Roamio has the OS on a chip and NOT the hard drive...I guess! In fact, I believe that a 4GB drive would work as 3GB does not seem standard. Did you use a WD RED? However, that would not include Cable Card stuff, etc correct?

Yes, WD10EFRX. And correct, its like a fresh brand new tivo, you would have to have cablecard paired again. The Roamio Pro came with a 3TB, the Roamio Plus came with a 1TB drive and the Roamio Basic came with a 500GB drive.

Yes, WD10EFRX. And correct, its like a fresh brand new tivo, you would have to have cablecard paired again. With 4TB you would have some extra steps of taking the drive out after it does its initial formatting (when it gets to guided setup screen, take out) and connect to computer to expand the drive to full 4TB capacity. Up to 3TB just put in and that's it.
Great! I would stick with a 3 GB. I also think there are other things I could use to just back up everything like HDD Raw Copy Tool. Then just save it to the PC and use it if anything goes wrong.

Poke around in the TiVo Upgrade Center forum, not sure of all the tools that have been created, but you might find something that will work for you.

Edge is TE4 only

Roamio has some older apps. I have a Bolt and a Roamio. Some of the apps on the Bolt have newer UIs than the same app on the Roamio. (Netflix, YouTube and HBOGo specifically)
Thank You but I do not use any of them and our Samsung TV's have YouTube and it is WAY faster than TIVO.

The apps on the Roamio are WAY faster than the Premiere. The Premiere is dog slow when it comes to apps. The Roamio is normal. The Bolt and Edge are a bit faster, but not night and day like the Premiere vs. the Roamio. So you might want to at least try the apps on the Roamio if you get one.

Thank you all so much but for my use I think I will stay with my Permiere 4 and XL4.
If you can afford it I'd dump the Premieres for Roamios just for the speed difference. The Premieres are dogs. Not just at running apps, but in the TiVo UI as well. The Roamio was a huge leap in that department. The Bolt and Edge are relatively incremental compared to the Roamio, but the Roamio is night and day better than the Premiere.
