I finally decided to venture into the HD realm and I am looking to pick up a used HR10-250, likely off ebay. After some reading, it seems to make sense that I verify the HDMI connection is in good working order and to make sure that the unit is in good standing with D*.

Are there any other due diligence items recommended I cover with the seller?

Get the serial # of the unit and the last digits of the access card to verify that the unit is free and clear of any charges with D*. Call D* and verify this yourself. Also ask D* when you call if there are any unpaid PPV movies charged to that unit/access card. They won't activate the card if there are unpaid PPV movies.

D* may still decide to make you buy a new access card for $20. It just depends on which CSR you get when you call to activate the unit.

You are aware that the HR10-250s won't receive the MPEG4 channels that'll be coming off the new satellites that D* has launched or will launch in the near future?

The HR10-250s are good units but they will be obsolete except for OTA and MPEG2 programming in the next year or so.

MPEG4 is the wave of the future.

Yeah, I am up to speed on the MPEG4 compatibility. Just haven't tried to wade the mental mire of Tivo v. D* PVR.

Thanks for the tip on the PPV. I am HOPING D* will let me use one of my existing cards, then I'll gift my hughes series 2 Tivo to the in-laws.

Why don't you wait about 2 weeks for the HR10's to not be able to receive the new HD channels?

The price may drop again and the market may be flooded.

You could wait until DIRECTV pulls the 10 HD channels the HR10 can get. You may pick them for a lot less.

Why take the plunge into the new HD channels with a receiver that can't get the channels?

Why take the risks with used equipment?

Have you tried calling DIRECTV to ask about the HR20? Many are getting them for way less than HR10's. And they will get the new 70 HD channels promised this fall and the 100 promised by years end. Plus Video on Demand (VOD), etc.
