DVR purchase - not from Direct TV

I do not have DVR service at this time. Can I purchase a Tivo Series 2 DVR from another source and use it with Direct TV? Do I have to order something and pay more monthly to Direct TV?

Regardless of where you buy the hardware, you still need a subscription for it to work.
If you don't already have the DVR service you'll have to add it to your DTV account at $5.99/month along with the $4.99 mirroring fee for the DTivo. You can add multiple DVRs to your account with no additional DVR fees but the mirroring fee still applies to any receivers added to your account. You should stick to the later model RID DTivos like the Philips DSR-704, among others. These are identified by the sticker on the back that have an RID number. DTV won't always be willing to activate a non-RID receiver anymore.
You can use a Standalone TiVo with DirecTV and not pay DirecTV any more for it. You will have to pay TiVo their subscritption fee for it, unless you get one of the basic equipped players and wish to live with that.
The DirecTV DV is a far better deal than a standalone model. The total monthly fees are lower, the picture quality is far better, and you get dual tuners and Dolby Digital recording capability at no extra charge.
DTV is offering them for 15 shipped right now, just ordered my 3rd one.
Sorry if I'm being daft. I have two standalone TiVos because I currently have cable. I am about to switch to DirecTV (getting Fios broadband and want to ditch cable), but I really enjoy the Home Media Option on my TiVos and I use it almost daily for transferring shows to and from TiVos (and desktop) as well as to stream music.

I understand that DirecTV TiVos/DVRs do not support TiVos HMO. If I keep my standalone TiVo boxes (and continue paying my regular TiVo subscription), will I be able to continue using HMO after I get DirecTV? If not, I think I'm going to have to keep cable, even though that would mean no MLB package for me (not willing to shell out for digital cable). :(

Thank you for any information, and again, sorry if this is obviuos, but some quick searching did not turn up an answer for me.

YES
Thanks, beartrap. One more thing: Do any/all DirecTV boxes have a serial input to connect to a standalone TiVo? I briefly had digital cable and had to use the IR cable "solution" (cable box had a crippled serial port) and it was a total disaster. I would not want to have to do the same thing with DirecTV.

If only certain DirecTV boxes have serial ports, is there a list anywhere, and can you request by model number when you sign up with DirecTV?

Thank you much.

If you have a DirecTivo, you would have no need to connect it to a stand-alone Tivo. You connect one (or two) satellite cables to the box, attach it to your TV and you are done.

He doesn't have a DirecTiVo. He wants to keep his series 2 SA TiVos to continue using the HMO, and connect them to a non-DVR D* receivers.

Wombat, to answer your last question, I think all of the newer non-DVR D* receivers have a connection (not sure if it's a serial connection) for hardwire integration with a SA TiVO. I currently have a D10-200 receiver wired to a SA series 1 TiVo, and it works fine.
Thank you, beartrap. I appreciate your help very much.

If the DirecTV DVR boxes didn't have two tuners and better picture quality it would be a complete no-brainer, but it is tempting . . . but I think I like streaming music to my TiVo too much.
If you are persistent and have a modicum of computer skills you can visit the Tivo Underground and Tivo Upgrade here which will lead you on a path to Networked DTivo heaven. You just have to find the Series 2 DTiVos like those for sale by the upgrader sponsors/advertisers up top, or take your chances on EBay.
