DVD Tivo or not?

1501 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  petew
I'm trying to decide whether to get a DVD stand alone player or get another Tivo with DVD.

Pros on stand alone are: can get DVD/VCR combo unit; and if some other 'medium' becomes popular I haven't outdated my Tivo unit.

Cons: Cost of stand alone seem to be not that much less than getting the Tivo with it; probably easier operation.

People with ESP: Does anyone think DVD is going to be outdated within the next 5 years??

The DVD has already been pronounced dead but with two consortiums duking it out to be the successor, it might just hold on for a little while longer. Also, I believe that both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players play "plain old DVDs" so it may not be that big of a deal for you.

I still use my Beta VCR sometimes (for playback - not new recordings) and it's 25 years old.
The CD was introduced at CES in 1981 CD sales didn't surpass Vinyl till the late 80's, Vinyl was still readily available into the 90's and still exists today. Past performance is not necessarily an indication of the future, but it's the best indicator we have .
