I have a Humax DRT400 that I upgraded 2 months ago to a 500GB DB35 Hard Drive. Unit worked great the first month and a half. However, in the last couple of days I decided to clean out old shows and shows from Tivo Suggestions that I don't want anymore.

It takes about 10 secs to delete a show using the "clear" button on the remote and if I delete a bunch on a row, it take about 30 secs for the screen to refresh.

It it because my Tivo recordings are too big? Did I not cache properly when I transferred the recordings from the original 40GB drive to this new one? Is the Humax processor really that slow?

I have read other threads and the only suggestion that I saw was to blow away the tivo and start from scratch. Now, do I have to erase all recordings or just do the basic guided setup? Is there some hardware issue or did I not transfer it properly when I did the drive switch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nope, the DRT400 is just slow. I have a couple of these and they are slower than my Pioneers. These units originally had 40 GB drives, so they potentially didn't have to index many shows. But adding a larger drive adds more indexing burden on the CPU. So it will seem slower when you have lots of stuff on the TiVo. Your TiVo probably hasn't had to delete anything in the last month an a half, it's just been recording more and more shows. Every time you delete something, it has to reindex the remaining shows. This takes longer with more stuff to index.

To answer your other questions about not properly doing the upgrade. It's kind of hard to tell if you did it right or wrong, if we don't know how or what you did to upgrade. What did you use to upgrade? Which boot CD? What command did you use?

Hopefully the new fall update will speed up the user interface some.

I wouldn't recommend it, but you can erase everything from the TiVo with the Clear & Delete Everything option, under the Restart the DVR option in Messages and Settings. This will delete EVERYTHING, including shows, season passes, wishlists, thumb settings, everything, and set the TiVo back to factory fresh mode. You'll have to run Initial Guided Setup again, as if you pulled the TiVo out of the box. This is overkill, IMHO, to solve your situation. Just be patient and slowly delete the unwanted shows, or let the TiVo do it for you. It will delete the oldest shows first, if you don't set a show to Keep Until I Delete (KUID).

Thanks for your help. I did two upgrades, my Sony SVR-3000 and my DRT400, both got the 500 GB treatment...The sony is working like a CHAMP with the humax dragging a$$.

I used the Hinsdale CD to do the upgrade and I used the same process to upgrade both drives, so I think it's just the hardware limitation of the Humax.

I deleted the 63 "Snapped" episodes my fiancee tivoed (get me scared sometimes how much she liked watching shows about women who kill their husbands).

After I deleted these, the Humax got a little faster...now I am working through my 191 Tivo Suggestions.

We just moved and my living room LCD has a Comcast HD DVR (praying and waiting for the TiVo update for that box), while the Sony is in my bedroom and the Humax is in my "office"....Turns out that in my new apt with my fiancee, I watch the TV and hence the Humax less is my office than before and I lost track of the amount of crap it was taping.

It was opposite in my old apt...the Humax got the most use (with 40GB) in my bedroom while the living room Sony wasn't used as much, so all my season passes were still getting recorded on my Humax and I wasn't watching them. Also with the larger hard drive I got lazy and wasn't managing the Humax when it had only 40 GB.

I really like the quality of my Sony SVR-3000, it has been going for 5 years and it still is a superior box over the Humax which was purchased in 2005.

Just too bad it's on a HD LCD now and I really want an HD Tivo, but until I can transfer my lifetime to a HD or S3 (I know, cha right!!!), I am going to hold out until I can't hold out NO MORE! (or I hit the lottery).

The reality is that the Sony on SD with the S-Video is still pretty good.

Any other tips are appreciated, but I think I have it under control.

I recently got a Humax DRT upgraded to a huge drive by Weaknees, and have the same problem. Extremely slow responses to everything. I called Weaknees, and they traded out the unit. Unfortunately, the replacement is just as slow. Is there any way to fix this by adding physical memory?

good question on memory or anything to speed it up. Mine has always been slow. Unless I delete and clear everything and then it is fast for a few weeks to a month. That I know of, their is nothing to speed it up at this time and yes I hope they will fix this with an upgrade.

Any idea who we could ask? Humax? Weaknees? A wizard on these boards? I'd be happy to throw more RAM in the thing if someone knows the spec. Or would I need to tweak the paging space allocations to take advantage of the additional physical memory?

You might get help with that in the underground forum area.

There is an update that is supposed to be coming out fairly soon. Hopefully it will speed things up a bit. I have a DRT 800 and am also hoping for a speed-up when it arrives.
