The Discovery Health Channel is running a series this week on "The
Truth About Food" with Oprah's favorite doctor, Dr. Oz.

This series is also being featured on today's Oprah show.

Program descriptions:

Oprah Winfrey

"Dr. Oz shows the inside of his body" Dr. Oz swallows a pill camera to
show the inside of his body and discusses how to eat more and still
lose weight.

I'm not a big fan of daytime tv, but when Doctor Oz is scheduled, you've got to Tivo this show!

Quote from the Discovery Health channel's website...
"Forget all the headlines you read. Here for the first time, we will
reveal the real truth about food. We'll cut through the spin and by
using scores of original experiments on hundreds of volunteers, we'll
show you the real science behind the food you eat and reveal just what
it does to your body.

Program schedule: (probably Eastern time zone)

About Food From Discovery Health and the BBC

This page offers program descriptions of each of the 6 shows in the
series, including...

THE TRUTH ABOUT FOOD: How to Feed Your Kids,

and more.

I'll watch on Oprah because I just did the pillcam thing myself last Thursday.
It looks like a really interesting show. I'm recording it to DVD.

How was the pillcam experience?

TONIGHT: Great Diet Debate

What if fat doesn't make you fat? What if carbs really do? The biggest diet debate since Atkins with Joy Behar, Gary Taubes, Dr. Andrew Weil, Oprah's health guru Dr. Oz, a 'Biggest Loser' trainer and more!

If you miss this show, it will probably re-air several times...

And you can check the CNN transcripts after the show airs.

I think Dr. Oz is scheduled for Monday's Oprah show, but as I type this that isn't showing up on Tivo listings or www.Oprah.com

Pretty interesting. The pillcam has a light, camera and transmitter and takes pictures every 2 seconds while transiting your system - amazing.
The pill was bigger than expected - took me 3 tries to get it down.

Multiple leads are affixed to your skin and attached to a small computer about the size of a portable heart monitor that you have to wear for the day. I laughed and decided to stay at home for the day when i saw the setup because between the harness and the computer's multicolored blinking lights you look like a suicide bomber...

You have to monitor the blinking lights every 15 minutes and must avoid MRIs, microwave ovens and anything magnetic while the pill is going through your system. After 8 hours, they take the computer back and download the images. If you don't see the evidence over the next few days that the pillcam is no longer inside you, you need to have an X-ray before having an MRI.

I was a little lightheaded from lack of water (you prep with a clear liquid diet the previous day, but cannot ingest even water after 10 pm the previous night) and had some minor cramping while it was going thought the system, but absolutely no big deal.

Pretty fascinating technology!

White Sox slugger Jim Thome and his wife were in the audience for the Oprah show last February. Dr. Oz was the featured guest. This program re-aired yesterday.

The Oprah show would put Jim on camera during the more "female" medical discussions. I'm not quoting those here.

Anyway, I read in the Chicago Tribune today that Jim Thome and his wife became the proud parents of a baby girl last month. Hmmm, is that around 9 months or so after the Oprah show???

Interesting quote from show:

Alternative medicines, Dr. Oz says, deal with the body's energy—something that traditional Western medicine generally does not. "We're beginning now to understand things that we know in our hearts are true but we could never measure," he says. "As we get better at understanding how little we know about the body, we begin to realize that the next big frontier … in medicine is energy medicine. It's not the mechanistic part of the joints moving. It's not the chemistry of our body. It's understanding for the first time how energy influences how we feel."
