Some DirecTV DVRs are TiVos. But the answer to the question asked is "no".
you sure about that? I know when I cancelled my Directv a few years ago I could still watch the programs on it before I had to send it back. Now maybe there was still a signal coming in but I would only get channel 101 because it was a deactivated box.

If you cancel service, they send a signal to your DVR deactivating it. You can't do anything with it, and that includes watching what you've recorded.

However, you don't need "live service" to watch your DVR. IOW, if you lose your signal (like a storm), you can still use your DVR.

So if you knew you were going to cancel, simply disconnect your DVR from the antenna, and it never gets the deactivate signal. I can't guarantee how long this works though.
