"Doctor, Is it my Disk?"

I have two TiVoHD units purchased in March, 2008. I replaced the original drives with 1TB WD drives within a couple of months of the original purchase.

One of the units is starting to exhibit some odd behavior. I'm wondering if it is the hard drive. Here are the symptoms:

- Now Playing list often takes a few extra seconds to display
- Some recordings seem to "skip"
- While transferring a show from one TiVo to the other, the receiving TiVo restarted twice while the transfer was in process.

I'd say it seems to work normally about 80% of the time. I've only noticed issues over the last couple of weeks.

Any suggestions for further troubleshooting?

Assuming this is the disk, have the disk replacement process changed since 2008? I used the MFStools from a Linux CD.

Thanks!

John

I dont know if that the drive. But you should use winmfs to make a backup of your tivo drive just incase.

You might want to pull the hard drive and run the WD diagnostics on it.

Is it a Caviar Green? Did you ever run wdidle3 on it?
Personally, I would do a Kickstart 54.

I'd rather trust the stuff from the company that made the drive.

He needs to pull the drive to make an MFS Live or WinMFS backup anyway.

After which, if it passes the manufacturer's most exhaustive non-destructive test, he can run Kickstart 58 and see if that helps.
drop in the original drive and let it update. Then get a 2tb drive and use the comer process to update and install in the tivo. run drive diagnostics from the mfr on the old 1tb and if it is good, clean it and drop it in a pc to serve up your dvds to the tivo.

Well, Kickstart 54 is relatively easy to do. Especially the quick tests. If they fail, he knows that the drive(s) need to be replaced ASAP.

wdidle3? Seriously? Are you actually suggesting he never noticed the soft boot hangs in the THREE YEARS these drives have been installed? Not to mention that the intellipark setting couldn't possibly contribute to his observed problems.

And he loses all of his recordings and settings, including CableCARD pairing.
Thanks for the ideas. I'll try the onboard Kickstart tests on the TiVo first, since I can do that easily -- assuming it has an issue, I'll go from there.
I ran the three shorter SMART tests of Kickstart 54. All passed. I'll let the extended test run a bit longer, but it suggests 320:00 minutes to complete, and I'll have to stop it before then.

The TiVoHD is on Comcast, using Cablecards. I guess my assumption was a disk issue, but perhaps it is something else.

I guess I can pull the drive and run some WD tests too. Not sure where the best bang for the time is.

No. Not if he took the common advice and waited until the cablecard was paired and working before the upgrade. The op waited "a couple of months", so I assume this was the case.

In most markets, Comcast only protects premium content, so the rest can be moved. Thus my suggestion to put the 1tb into a pc for serving dvds, I suppose I could have said dvds and content moved from the tivo.
He still loses all of his SPs. If he wants to expand to 2TB, he has to use JMFS anyway and a method has been developed to expand an already expanded drive.

That seems like the next step after running (and passing) the Kickstart 54 SMART tests.

It is one of the older WD drives that worked up through a particular serial number.

Looking at shows recorded over the last two days -- not 20 minutes will go by without some stuttering. :(

Weird, my TivoHD is behaving flaky too.. I originally thought it might be the drive, but I replaced the drive and I'm still having probs.. (I also think it might be the power supply, I've had some weird electronics failures lately in my bedroom... including one currently dead S3)

Now Playing is often BLANK except for netflix (if I have network connected) and Recently Deleted.. rebooting will make it come back for a while. I've even recently seen it in action where Now Playing was there/working, but when I deleted a show, it goes into this not there phase.

Downloading podcasts often makes it reboot, and I think doing the daily connection does sometimes too (though since it seems to download podcasts any time it's connected, I'm not sure it's that).. My current workaround is to leave the network cable unplugged most of the time.

Transfers also are sometimes stopping or causing reboot, but again I'm not sure if it's the above or not... I was able to successfully transfer a half hour show to computer the other day, and will probably try putting my local router into router mode (instead of bridge mode) to play with fully local transfers some more (where it can't try to connect to the net).

This was happening with my old drive, AND is happening with my new upgraded drive. Would filesystem probs cause such problems? Seems like not to me.

My TiVo didn't have the decency to last until the weekend. Today it just went to gray screens. I unplugged it until I have time to poke at it on Saturday. I brought my other TiVo up from the basement and am using it now. Hopefully I will be able to reboot the other long enough to clone the drive. Of course, I now worry that if I clone the drive, I will clone some badness. Should I just go back to the original drive and clone / expand that instead (to a new 1TB drive)?
